I know the NIH has a loan repayment program for M.D.'s that do research (http://www.lrp.nih.gov/), but when I look at the specifications, it appears to be only for certain branches of clinical research.

Does anyone know if these programs also cover basic science (lab) research? If not, are there other loan repayment programs that do? Are there limitations on the field of research one pursues?

Please cite sources, if possible. Thanks!

From what I remember from a presentation by the director of that program last fall, extramural (ie not at NIH lab in Bethesda) are restricted to those predefined areas (pediatrics, etc). Intramural (you are doing a fellowship at NIH, have started a lab there, etc) are not restricted.

Research with human tissues or human cognitive phenomena qualifies.
