Is anybody here a Canadian studying osteopathic medicine in the States? Or has conversed extensively about finances with one?

I am interested to learn: Do Canadian banks extend medical school loans to DO students as well as MD students? Are the maximum limits higher to take into account the higher tuition of US schools? Are there other viable options for Canadians--without rich US family willing to co-sign insane CanHelp loans--to pay for DO education?

Thanks for any help. 🙂 (Before anyone asks, the reason I post this here rather than simply contacting individual banks is that I have been having great difficulty getting answers to even seemingly simple questions from loans officers. I guess such loans are so rare very few have experience with them.)

I'm a Canadian studying at a US MD school but the same should apply for DO students.

canHELP is no longer offered. You can get 150,000 LoC (unsecured but really depends on your co-signer) from Cdn. banks with a co-signer at prime. You can get loans from your provincial govt.

That's about it for financial resources. Depending on your cost of attendance, you may need your parents/family/spouse to support you financially in addition to the resources I mentioned above.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm a Canadian at a DO school and I have two lines of credit from Canadian banks which I use to pay for school and living expenses. I had some difficulty getting the loans approved, not because of credit history or anything like that, but because some banks would not loan medical lines of credit to Canadians studying outside of the US.

You can try MD Financial, but they declined to give me money when they heard I was going to a DO school (I still hate them for that). Maybe you will have better luck.

Definitely try RBC. I ended up getting money from Scotiabank and TD bank, but I had a very strong Canadian co-signor with a good credit history and long work experience at the same place of employment. They all stressed that the co-signor had to live in Canada.

If you're from Ontario, OSAP will give you about 5,000 per year (not much).

Good luck!
