Question says it all! Hoping to obtain thoughts on this. How much does location matter? Does the community you make within medical school matter more? Thanks for your consideration in answering.

Yeah this is way too vague.

Location is also so personal to people. I usually try, when I'm trying to advise people in here, to get a sense of why they want to go to a location - is it first/only chance in a lifetime to switch up their home? Do they have a stable longterm partner who wants to go there or is there? Do they have family and would family being close be a good thing for that particular person?

Prestige in a vacuum matters less. I go to a "prestigious" school, and there are advantages. There are better resources, "better" relationships to make (I personally would take a quality mentor over someone who is well known any day, but it's useful to have the latter on your side too when it comes to residency etc). But at the end of the day, it's more about what you do with those opportunities. I generally say there are some general tiers that I recommend (as a non-expert) should lightly impact people's decisions, in kind of a "why not go to a school that will give me X resources", but nothing explicit like thou must pick school ranked 8 over school ranked 12.
