Logistically, exactly HOW do you go about setting up away rotations?

Hey all,

I got to a US allo school that has a notoriously lazy administration, I'm in the middle of my third year and have literally no idea how to set up aways other than to register on VSAS...

I'm interested in a competative specialty that I know aways will be key for- how do I go about getting a jumpstart on that process now? Should I contact the program directors directly and express my interest in their program?

First take a deep breath. For whatever programs you are interested in go to the department website and look at what they require. Generally there is a "Visiting Medical Student" or some such heading in the education section. See what they require and start to gather the materials. Some places require things like a criminal background check and they invariably require some sort of health form to be filled out by student health. Even if the program only accepts VSAS some of this stuff will need to be scanned in. That's stuff that you can begin to gather in early in the year even before places start accepting applications.
If something is unclear there is usually a contact person (generally not the PD) and they are pretty helpful.

Echo the above comment.

In addition, look under contacts for some sort of "Academic Coordinator" or "Administrative Assistant" and shoot this person an email. They will usually help you out or they will forward you to the person in charge of student rotations.

These people are your best bet for setting up rotations. They are invaluable.
