So Im on the waitlist at my top school, a school that strongly encourages expressing continued interest and has a lot of waitlist movement. I have sent in a couple interest letters already covering academic reasons why it is my top choice but nothing about my personal life. Would it be bad to mention in a LOI my personal reasons I want to attend the school? My significant other will be attending a masters program in the same place and I have always wanted to live in that particular city. Or should I just stick to academic reasons why?

I can't imagine sending in a 3rd will help as much as they encourage LOI. Even they must have some sort of threshold where it becomes too much. Who knows, maybe they just really love the begging.

Edit: Begging may be a bit strong but still.

Is the school Georgetown?

Do you have an acceptance yet? If so, it may be worth it if there have been good developments on your end, i.e. an LOI is only helpful if your update is meaningful. Meaningful is best described as something that boosts your CV and your value. Sending a letter telling someone that you like the city the school is in and want to hang out with your SO is not a good reason to send in an LOI.

Ahhh...a needy school. Can you share via PM which one it is, if other than Gtown???

Your reasons below are fine to mention, especially the part about the SO.

I stand corrected.

Out of curiosity, which schools are considered "needy"?
