Inspired by similar thread in the pre-allo forum, I gotta know if long hair would be a detriment for a guy during the application process?

i think to be safer you should cut it short because the ad com people are more likely to be conservative people and you don't want them to make any assumptions about you.

Hi guys,

Which is more appropriate: To clean-shave my bear or just live it trim. I usually keep a clean well-trimed bear that people says looks good on me and I 'm wondering if that will look bad to the conservative eyes of adcom. Please any suggestion will be appreciated.

As long as it's clean and trim, and won't be in the way when you eat, it should be fine. There are a few guys in my class and the class above that have beards, although they are kept quite short and obviously well-maintained.

As for long hair, our physical diagnosis teacher was telling us this story about a student in the past. He had just finished a simulated patient assessment lab, and the patient submitted an evaluation of the student. All of the comments were positive, but the patient had also written that she disapproved of the student's long hair, which he kept in a ponytail. He immediately went to get a haircut! Anyway, that's a little off topic, but I do agree that you might want to play it more on the conservative side. Other than the men who keep their hair long for religious reasons, I haven't seen any guys with hair longer than about the middle of their neck at my school.

I don't think you should cut it just for your interview. As long as it is neat, it shouldn't matter. One of my interviewers (a physician) at another school (MD) had long hair--I don't think he discriminated on hair length. While most of the guys in my class have short hair--there are a couple with lots of hair (kind of "puffy")--so it didn't stop them.

Good luck!
