Hello! I’m very fortunate to be choosing between Long SOM and UTMB, and I know both are excellent schools that I’d be happy to attend. As of right now (with the understanding that interests can definitely change), I’m leaning toward pursuing a competitive surgical specialty. Because of that, I’m trying to figure out whether Long SOM would set me up better for success in matching into a competitive surgical field, or if the two schools are similar enough that they would offer essentially the same opportunities/advantages. For those familiar with either or both schools, I’d especially appreciate insight!

Long SOM

Pros:

  • In house I6 CT residency, Plastics Fellowship.
  • Better clinical rotations (?)
  • More prestigious (?)
  • Better match
  • Better location (city)
Cons:

  • Graded preclinicals (no cap on honors, though)
  • in-house exams
  • higher COA and tuition

UTMB

Pros:

  • I6 Plastics, CT Fellowship
  • P/F for preclinicals (although they do rank)
  • NBME Exams
  • Closer to home (I am from the Galveston area)
  • Lower COA and tuition

Cons:

  • Less prestigious (?)
  • Worse clinical rotations
  • Slightly less competitive match
  • Worse location

I got off the waitlist on Long on the 7th, then accepted the offer. On the 15th, I then was accepted off the waitlist at UTMB. I have until the 20th to respond to them.
