I've been subscribed to their youtube channel since I was in high school. I used to watch just to learn. Completely forgot they existed for the past 2 years until this popped up on my subscription page.

LOOK AT THIS THING!!

This is the craziest practice I have ever seen! The whole time I was watching it my head was spinning. How can such a practice even keep itself afloat!? I've shadowed at a practice that was kind of like this. It was 2 medium sized buildings (stand alone, not in a plaza) right down the street from each other owned by 1 GP. He made one a medium-sized GP office (8 GP chairs and 5 Hygiene) that was ran by him and an associate, and the other a speciality-only practice where he hired an orthodontist, OMFS, etc.

He told me he was having trouble staying afloat because of tech costs and debt. He also said retaining GP's and specialty Dr's was a huge problem for him, and his offices were nothing even close to this thing. He was near the end of retirement and actually ended up selling everything a few months after I left.

While this is very exciting to watch, I still can't comprehend how this monster of a practice will stay afloat. Will be very interesting to see this doctor's journey and progress. Sharing because I know many of you will be amazed and interested as well.

ALSO, he mentioned patients flying in from around the country and even over-seas to have treatment done by him. So he built 3 mini hotel rooms into the practice. What are your thoughts about this? I've never heard of such a thing until watching this. I'm still in absolute shock lmao

So funny you mentioned that video. I just watched that video last night too!

But no way was that done for $3M lol. That new-construction building + land + all the equipment it's going to hold probably cost somewhere around $10-15M if I had to guess. The building is absolutely MASSIVE!

The parking lot alone probably cost $500k-$1m

I'm going the med route so I know very little about dentistry but how does anyone afford or justify that big of a price? I know ophthalmologists making 7 figures in my area who live in $6m+ homes but their offices look very basic/80s design and even the new ones aren't this fancy.

Is this more of a long-term play like Amazon killing off the competition then dominating the market - meaning every fresh dentist will have to work at this place?

That was kind of the whole point of this post lol I don't understand how this is manageable either. I looked into demographics and Springfield, MO is not even underserved or anything. There are a decent amount of dentists in the area. He also says all over youtube that he charges normal/ avg prices for all procedures, it's not supposed to be a luxury boutique place with high fees.

I have no idea how anyone could afford to build something like that and keep it afloat off normal production, even if it is entirely FFS with no insurance. Even if he hires associates, I'm just not seeing it. The expenses and debt just seem soul crushing.

FFS practice, has yearly contracts you can buy into that works like a pseudo insurance plan. I saw the video a while back where he was talking about doing the build out, I didn’t expect it to be done already.

I've thought about doing something like that once I get out of dental school. Didn't know of anyone that currently offers something like that already. I'll definitely have to look into his pseudo-insurance/ membership plan! It seems like a great idea, especially now since Covid happened.

And yeah you're telling me! I can't believe he has over 100K subscribers now. Last I checked he was under 10k. I've heard of people flying out to diff. plastic surgeons and dermatologists but I still can't wrap my head around people doing the same for dentistry. Crazy to hear about and even more insane to see a practice with hotel rooms to accommodate.

I know a few people who fly to Mexico or turkey to get $30k+ of dental work done (whole family) for ~$8k and also turn it into a vacation for another $6k (including flights/hotel). But I just can't see why anyone would fly to see a dentist since there are great ones in every US city.

There are a lot of people that live transient lifestyles, such as truckers, etc. This guy produces content and engages his audience, because of this engagement people feel a special connection, as if they know him and can trust him. What he has been able to accomplish goes beyond just having a brick and mortar office, he's let people in and shared with them goals and who he is, which a lot of people can appreciate. To be fair, by him allowing the level of exposure that he does through social media, he might actually be more well known than the local guy down the block who you see for 5 minutes during a hygiene check, unless that guy is also a local who you may run into socially. He had a really good idea and capitalized on it, it's cool to see that there are different ways to practice.

Unless what he says about people flying in to get treated here is true, I have no idea how this would be feasible from a numbers sense. Although I suppose this goes beyond just the numbers, its a huge accomplishment for a dentist to make their practice a fun place for patients to visit.

Maybe, maybe not. You would be surprised how much you can accomplish and make in a single 5 op practice op without taking out a 14 million dollar note. Now if you are into empire building this is your thing. The staffing alone would be a huge hurdle.

This guy isn't a dentist. Wonder if he routinely even sees patients. He is a CEO and businessman.

In all fairness I think he still sees patients, there was a video where he placed an immediate implant, being the face of the practice I suspect he still has to see some patients. But I get your point, this guy is a CEO and dentistry is the product, This guy has business skillset that 99% dentist dont have and actually dont want . if he wasnt in dentistry he would be doing some other large scale venture. Its impressive to pull this off in Springfield given the demographics.

The takeaway for me was... a lot of space that is not utilized well. I can’t imagine what the electric bill for heating and cooling will look like for all those big hallways and high ceilings.

20 treatment rooms for general dentistry is not unheard of. I have 16 at one office, and I see a lot of pediatric patients. 8 Ortho chairs is very common too. He probably brought together different specialists under 1 roof, which is not rare. The largest dental office I heard of was somewhere in Indiana... 20+ dentists and specialists in 1 building. Crazy!

Anyways... the doctor in the video went for the “resort” look for his office. Only very few patients would care about that... most patients just want to see a good dentist in a clean office and a great staff. The highest producing offices and the best dental teams don’t have a big office like that. But hey, it’s cool! I personally would rather have low start up cost and low overhead than build a super expensive high end office with very high overhead. Yes, I’m introvert too. I don’t even drive my porsches to the office, let alone have a super flashy office.
