  1. Podiatry Student
Hey all, to make a longish story short I graduated from UCF in 2010 with a c3.19 and 3.0 science GPA then took the MCAT in 2011 with intentions to apply to med school. After getting a 21 on the MCAT I decided to hold off on a year to study then retake the MCAT and apply again this year. During my year off I have found I don't want to pursue medical school and have found Podiatry to be a great fit for me. With my stats what do my chances look like? I have been on here for a while reading threads and looking at different schools and my stats compared to others seem be to right on when it comes to Podiatry Schools.

Also, my lowish GPA is hidden by the fact that I had a brain tumor removed during my junior year at UCF and my final three semesters my GPA was higher with a 3.4, 3.2 and 3.8 for my final three semesters. Thanks for the help in advance! 🙂

If I were you I would apply asap, the earlier the better. Just so you know medical school curriculum and podiatry curriculum are almost identical. I am not sure what deterred you from wanting to go to medical school.

My GPA and sGPA are a tad bit lower than yours, but I got a 26 MCAT. I just submitted my app's 2 weeks ago and I have 3 interview invites already. Still waiting for 6 other schools to respond. If you could retake MCAT for 24+, I think you'll be solid. You might be OK with the 21, but I'm not exactly sure. What do you guys think?

Wow! Proud of you for overcoming such a hurdle! Apply now, apply broadly, and you will almost definitely get in as long as you don't come off as an antisocial weirdo/psycho type at your interviews. 🙂

My decision for not wanting to go to medical school wasn't so much the curriculum…and I know this may sound strange/not believable, but it was after I read the book Born to Run that I have become hooked on the whole locomotion side of medicine. I love running/exercising and even had a foot problem as a teenager so this kind of just seems to fit me. Does anything think that a January application would be too late? Or should I wait until next August and and apply for 2014? I still want to get in more shadowing/volunteer hours and don't want to rush my application.

You have a solid chance of getting in SOMEWHERE if you apply broadly in January.

May I ask for you who took the mcat how hard you had to study and how long to achieve a decent score, 22-26 range? I have kaplan books and exam cracker books, but i really need to freshen up on my chem and physics as well as the verbal. Bio I think i'm okay. Also how do you set up a study plan based on 3 months, esp if you don't remember much?

I actually took a Kaplan course after I graduated and honestly it didn't help at all. If you just hit your old science books if you have them, along with your kaplan/ exam cracker books you should be fine. I actually have an extra set of books for my course (they sent two) if you want to PM me, I would sell you the books on the cheap because they were actually pretty helpful.

As for studying hard? Yeah it was pretty much my life for a solid 3-4 months. 🙁. I might not be the best person to ask for a study plan but I would definitely start with your weakest area and make it your strongest. My course grouped the biological and physical sciences together, with the verbal separate which seemed to make sense. Three months out your going to have to study probably five days a week. And make sure you take plenty of practice tests too. Hopefully that helps out some? Again PM me if you are interested in the books/have any more questions.
