So this is a current family situation...

There is a family member named "Jill" that made a condescending remark about the fact that I am still a "pre-med" TRYING to get into med school. She works in the Car industry and makes 100k+ currently. I usually do not let ppl like this get to me, however this was a family member. Also, she is at least 10 years older than I am. I am posting this because I was very upset yesterday that I let her get to me...and would like to know what you ppl think about my situation.

🙂

Oh by the way...this happened b/c we were having a semi-debate about other things. I felt that she crossed the line by attacking my education. She made the comment that I will be in school for the rest of my life.

ask her about her job security...

Now this is a special case b/c she actually has job security at the moment....she's good at her job & playing politics. Basically a dragonlady. Nice clothes, nice car, etc (works in a man's industry for so many years...so she's basically one herself now)

get her back by being really condescending to your patients when u r a doc

Get back at her by taking the high road. Insist that you could never do what she does because you don't have the talent/intelligence/etc. Be humble yet firm about your reasons for being a doctor. Having a little class can go a long way in the end.

Get over it? People are going to make more than you for doing things of less worth to society. She makes $100k selling cars. Lawyers will make millions sueing you. Some other women (and men) will make more than you can ever hope to by taking a butt-pounding on camera. So what?

Edit: And you are JUST a pre-med. Get over it. We're all useless leeches on society up until we're actually physicians. At that point, you start paying the investment back a dozen times over to an extent most other people won't experience. Delayed gratification is the name of the game. if she was so happy with her plot in life, she wouldn;t be comparing herself to someone with 10 less years to accomplish something.

Just ignore her...

This sounds like a personal problem.. Obviously, physicians don't need to be stood up for. Jill is just a jerk. What can we do?

Ask her where she was 10 years ago. 🙂

Doctors always have to keep up with the literature and learn, but they aren't really in "school" their whole life. In all seriousness, she's probably just insecure. After all, when you're her age, you're going to be an attending physician!

Well tell her that she has won the lottery. She is an anomaly and not the rule. Furthermore, it seems to me that you are quite insecure about your choice if this is getting to you. Tell her and yourself that life is a marathon. She's a sprinter, right now she looks like shes miles ahead, but the the race is just beginning and in 10 years when youre at her age, she will still be at the same place she is right now because she has already tapped 90% of her potential growth, where as for you, there is still 99% growth now, and probably youll only be 50% of the way there in 10 years. So remember, confidence in yourself, and in your ability.

Lastly remember, in medicine what you will receive wont just be money. You will have one of the greatest degrees of job satisfaction anywhere. She may feel good that she saves people money on their cars, but shell never know how it feels when you save a life, or help someone regain the ability to walk. Chin up!

Just let it go and focus on your own goals. Don't let it get to you because there are lot more people out there that make 100k+ than you might think, and there are lot of people who make more money than doctors with less education. Who cares? When it's all and done, you're going to be a doctor. How cool is that?

tell her she's exhibiting symptoms of a rare venereal disease you encountered in your studies

When health care is socialized, you might want to work part-time in the car industry to make ends meet. Don't burn your bridges. 🙂

Not to nitpick, but your title and post are quite different. She wasn't looking down on Physicians, she was looking down on her pre-med brother who is trying to make it into med school. A pre-med and a doctor are quite different. Pre-meds are a dime a dozen, most of them are looked down upon at my school too.

She might be total beeyotch, but she's right.

Even if you will get into medical school... you WILL be in school for MORE than ten years... 10 years of EXCRUCIATING effort. And in 10 years doctors might be making less than 100K, depending on specialty and how hard you're willing to work. Don't be a sucker, don't go to medschool.

BTW... A while back I made a post about Obama's initiative to collect information about anti-Obamacare initiatives to [email protected]. In my post, I encouraged folks on this forum to express their outrage and spam this email address. For which I was promptly awarded a 'transgression' by the admins... You know... that really really hurt.

Guess what... Days later, Obama camp suspended [email protected].

In the military board-certified ER docs are paid $107,690.13 + $15-25k (tax-free housing) + $2.3k (tax-free food). And this is after the military had increased the pay for military doctors to help with retention.

This is what the government considers fair pay for board-certified doctors who are separated from family and sent to combat zones.

It's hard to make conclusions based off of such limited information.

I've met many pre-meds who act like they're already doctors, and are incredibly arrogant. I can easily see somebody getting snappy dealing with a kid who thinks they're hot ****.

Who gives a damn? Why care? It isn't her life. Find something you want to do and go do it. People are condescending all the time. I came to the conclusion a long time ago that these people are weak. They lack confidence, passion, and understanding. I don't believe that she became the way she is because she was hanging around guys a bunch. She was a product of her desires. She wants to be the stereotyped biatch, well she is. Congrats to her. Go do your own thing. She doesn't have to do it. Why waste your time arguing and bickering about pointless crap when you can actually go get better at something.

Being upset about that tells me more about your doubts in the field than anything else. Buck up, work hard and do what makes you happy. While it isn't as glorious or lucrative as people think, there are very very few fields that give you access to the things we experience. We see complex problems (social and medical), life, and death. We hear amazing stories and tragic stories on a scale most can't fathom. We meet amazing people and complete a-holes, also on a scale most can't fathom. Sure we have tons and tons and tons and tons of bureaucratic crap, decreasing reimbursements, and a never ending education. Such is life.

I might be reading this differently, so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

You ARE still a premed, and you ARE still trying to get into medical school, and you ARE going to be spending most of the rest of your life in school/residency/learning/getting cont. ed. credits etc...

How is that "attacking your education"? Did she say anything wrong?

Well admittedly, I am sometimes a "big shot" so I am definitely not denying that. Seeing from another's point of view, I can see how basically I am a pre-med student that hasn't done anything real with his life. All I have really done is learned a couple things about science, but really haven't made an contribution to society. On the other hand, this woman is a major biatch...and unfortunately she might be marrying into the family. The problem with simply dismissing things like this (which I swear I am the MASTER at 99% of the time - if you knew me...you'd realize this is true), is that I will be forced to be around her. I have never hit a woman in my life, but if I started...I wouldn't mind starting with her. Okay I'm not actually going to physically strike anyone, but my blood boils simply thinking about her.

Thanks for responses on both sides of the argument. Truly, we pre-meds are the future of health care. However, anybody who is somebody, has been a nobody at some point. If I ever do become a "somebody", this is just the point in my life where I have to be a "nobody". To be quite honest, I can see why I got so upset. It wasn't my doubts about becoming a physician, but rather I felt that my ego/pride was attacked. I have always been aware of this, but will work harder in the future to have less of 1.

Thanks SDN!

Sometimes you have to take your licks.

If I had been in your position, I would've been like, "That's awesome. Is your company hiring? I need to pay for my medical school tuition somehow and the government will force doctors to work for free anyway when Medicare runs out of money." 🙂

Just say, "Sorry, becoming blue-collar 5hit like you is not part of my career plan."

FWIW, I know some medical students who work as street musicians to help pay for their beer money.

Dragonlady? Does that mean shes Asian?

You are just a pre-med who is still trying to make it into med school with no knowledge of if you will even get in. What's so condescending about pointing out the truth?

If we don't go into medicine, whose gonna save peoples lives?

IMGs and PAs and NPs.

Look.

You have circa 60 years left on this rock.

You can either...

(A) go into medicine, slave away for 10+ years, and then be an indentured government servant till the day you die, with ever decreasing paycheck, or...

(B) choose another career, enjoy life, and make MORE money than doctors do, all done at a fraction of an effort and sacrifices that medicine entails.

It's really that simple. Don't give me BS about saving lives. Firefighters save lives. Food inspectors save lifes. Cops save lives.
