Hi Everyone!

I had this really nice post typed out, and I went to post it and since I had lost my connection, I lost the post. So, here goes again.

I am 28, and I have had an extremely rough collegiate career, one I am pretty ashamed to divulge to my friends and family. Four schools and ten on-and-off years of college classes, and I am trying to rebuild my gpa to be able to get into a dental school. I will finally have amassed enough credits in some orderly fashion so that this coming spring I will graduate with two associates degrees (finally, something).

I signed up to take the DAT 3 days after finals last winter semester (yes, dumb, I know) and neglected to reschedule, so I took it so I wouldn't lose the money. I scored a 15 overall, with a 15 on the PA portion with absolutely no studying of any sort and no organic classes at that point.

At this point, I know I need to really bust ass and get my gpa up, and study, study, study for the DAT and do really well on it.

I have shadowed a dentist for over a year, but have no research experience or volunteer work. I have to work a lot, so I have limited time. What are some good choices for volunteer work, and what kind of options do I have for research? Does anyone know if there is anything outside of school that is available for research work?

I believe that I interview well, and I believe that my technical abilities are second to none (I guess you have to believe in yourself like that when 1/10,000 of an inch can cost you $65,000).

Do you guys think I have a shot to get in somewhere if I really work hard at my weaknesses, or am I just dreaming?

Thanks for any help you guys have!

G

Simply put, where there's a will there's a way.

From your post you've shown that you know what you have to do to become a competitive applicant.

I don't know if i'd advise you to take on research responsabilites. Only you can make the judgement of whether you have the time for it, but if you're working, going to school and studying for the DAT i'd say you have plenty to focuss on. Most applicants don't have any research experience.

I don't know what your reason is for having such a rough, extended college experience, but you better be willing to demonstrate to admissions comittees that you are working toward an upward trend and you have a valid reason.

Put your nose to the grindstone and that's really the best you can do at this point.
