Looking for advice for MD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your LGBTQ status is a major plus, along with you upward trend GPA, military status, number of clinical/research hours. However, that 3.0 cGPA is an obstacle for MD right now. We will need you to come back with you MCAT score in order to more accurately assess your chances.

Are you dead set on MD or would you consider DO also?

The only reason I want to do MD is because I want to go back into the military and USUHS is MD. I was also told by a recruiter that I would need to apply MD to get the HSPS scholarship to go back into active duty service.

I would like to add that my poor grades are from a community college and not a 4 year university if that holds any weight.

You can absolutely use the HPSP for a DO school. In fact, a lot of HPSP recipients tends to be DOs, probably because most DO schools are like 60K a year for tuition.

Also, FYI, USUHS weighs undergrad GPA heavily. You’ll really need to up that GPA to have a shot at USU.

USUHS is MD, but as mentioned above, HPSP is available for both MD and DO schools. Both avenues lead back to military medicine but with a different time of commitment. If you have enough years of service where you will likely be staying until 20/retirement - USUHS is the better option, in my opinion.

OP, feel free to send me a PM with any military medicine and/or USUHS specific questions. And good luck in your journey!

Thank you for your response. The recruiter I spoke to, for some reason, kept saying only MD. Maybe I should do an SMP if I’m still interested in USUHS.
