Hey all...long-time reader of this forum...just wanted to solicit some ideas from all you pre-dents on what kind of job I could perform for the next 7 months...

I graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering...that said, I can't really get a job in that field due to the fact that I'd leave in 7 months and I want to be honest with my employer...

So, I'm stuck with finding something for the next 7 months...and I don't want to wait tables...I'd prefer some kind of office administration/clerical job...are any of you in the same situation as me? What are you going to do? Has anyone had success with a temp. agency?? If anything, I thought this would be a great place to perhaps get some ideas on how I could spend my time the next 7 months...knowing I have to work as much as possible of course.

By the way, I'll be attending Univ. of Texas at Houston Dental Branch...if any of you are in my class, I can't wait to meet you!!!

Thanks in advance for your input!

Welcome to mac donalds may I take your order?

At the very least, thanks for taking this thread back to the top...

Nice one, though...I considered McDonald's...it's actually kind of a sore spot. I just got back from my 3rd interview with them (included a 6 section test called the FAT), and they told me they are going to go with someone else.

Any other ideas?

Hello,

Unless you are strapped for cash, I suggest you just relax and look foward to dental school experience. Better yet, talk to your current students and read ahead of the materials so you will be prepared. I had degrees in Aerospace Engineering so my first year was tough as I was not used to memorizing lots of facts. DP

before i started working as dental assistant, i did all kinds of work. i waited tables, i worked the cashiers at a store, i even worked as a janitor at an office building (i remember this white collar secretary who always gave me that condescending look as she passed by while i was mopping the floor. later somehow she found out i go to UCLA and that i'll be going to dental school and her attitude towards me totally changed. it made me realize how snobby people can be and told myself i'll never be that kind of a person)

there's nothing wrong with those kind of jobs. i actually pride myself in having those experiences under my belt and as a result i have greater appreciation of what i'm about to do with my career.

anyone who considers himself/herself self-made person starts from the bottom and work his/her way up.

good luck with your endeavors! 👍

very good point! I would suggest reviewing the Anatomy. I'm in your shoes with an engineering degree. Working in Industry just does not make sense right now. I am just starting in a new research project at my undergrad school's medical school and taking couple of prereq classes this semester.

Hello,

When I started at UMKC in 1991, anatomy was tough since I was not used to memorizing facts so you should start on that. Look me up UMKC Class of 1995. DP

Hey js 24 and others,

I just graduated and am starting dental school in the fall (BU or Tufts), and I registered with a temp agency. You basically just need to know how to type and some basics with other Microsoft programs. Well, the temp agency placed me as an office manager (aka secretary) at a construction firm (with madd engineers) to replace a woman who's on maternity leave. So this job will last me about three months, and then, who knows. Yeah, the workers here, I feel like, they see me as just some lowly high school graduate who does temp work. They do little to get to know me, but I think it goes both ways. I'm anti-social too. Oh well. Anyway! Temp agencies, my first job was at some company and I put packets together (like, put in a pile then staple, repeat 1,000 times). Kinda mundane, but oh well. You win some, you lose some. Either way, it's easy work and OK pay.

My dad was like, you graduated college, how come you only make $12 an hour? I barely graduated high school and look at me. Ugh! I don't think he understands that I cannot join a company knowing I'll leave in six months.

So js 24, just send your resume out to a few temp agencies. With my experience, larger agencies are better. And, make sure in your resume, add skills like, proficient in typing, Excell, Powerpoint, can file, and you have good interpersonal skills. I mean, if you think about it, you yourself knows that you are a smart son of a gun and gonna make the big bucks in a few years. So, good luck!

If you did well on your DAT or ejoy teaching you can be a tutor. You can try to do private tutoring on your own or you can become a Kaplan instructor.

look for a paid internship? the pay wont be as good as a real job, but you can use your education and your employer will only expect to have you for a short period of time.
