I am a non-trad student with two kids, 5 and 8, and it is very important to me that their lives are disrupted as little as possible when I enter med school. As a result, the only schools that I plan on applying to are OUHSC and OSUCOM with a preference for OU since it is closer.

I have a decent gpa (3.6+) and am fairly confident that I can score a 30+ on the MCAT. I will start vollunteering at a local hospital and shadowing various doctors this week and I would say that I am more involved in my local community that the average Okie so I have some decent EC's. My major weakness is that I have worked in the construction field for the last 10+ years and have zero work related experience in the medical field.

It will be another year before I apply for acceptance to med school. I would greatly appreciate any advice as to what I could do until then to help beef up my chances of being accepted to either school. I know there are tons of other posts purtaining to this type of info in general, but I have yet to find a post that deals with these two schools in particular.

Thanks in advance.

Spend some time shadowing Drs and volunteering in some kind of medical program. Even if it is just a few hours here and there, it'll help you out. Also, OSUCOM requires a DO letter of recommendation, so you'll want to get that lined up.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about OSU...and there are a number of OSUCOMers who are regularly on SDN. You should be able to get a number of opinions. Feel free to post questions or send me a PM.

Thanks much, DrMom. I had already been debating on sending you a pm about OSUCOM.

Hello there,

I'm an MS1 at OU. Several OU students that have posted on this thread. It may be of some help, feel free to post anytime. I check it regularly along with several classmates.

A little about myself: I was accepted to both OU and OSU (the only schools that I applied to). I had an internal debate that lasted a few weeks over which school I should attend around my interview times. If you would like to know my exact reasoning, talk to me in the other thread or PM me. I don't want to turn this into a med school bashing event. Both schools have good things and bad things, but I decided that ultimately OU was a better choice for both my family and my future. I'm a married student-no kids yet, but I'm sure that one or two will come along before the end of my medical training. I factored this in heavily during my decision.

As for school here-I love it. I can honestly say that right now I am at the happiest and most personally fulfilled point in my life to date, and it only keeps looking better. If you would like to contact me about anything, feel free. I would also be available anytime in the early part of next semester to give you a personal tour. You can see the mod, meet some of my classmates, and attend lecture if you like. Good luck with the application.
