So a few quick things about me
  • I'm currently finishing up my B.S at Queen's University in Life Sciences (I'm Canadian).
  • I've had a hard time in first year and a even worse time in second year but I've been fixing things but the way things are, I will be finishing with a GPA in the 2.0 to 2.5 range out on a 4.0 scale.
  • I've pretty much accepted there is no chance of dental school but last summer, I decided to take the DAT on a whim. I bought the Kaplan book, studied for 4 days, and ended up scoring an AA of 22 which I think is decent.
This leads me to my predicament.
My GPA is absolutely garbage (Although I have been improving - I had a 3.8 for my last semester) but it's just at the point where I don't see any way of me fixing it even if I took a 5th or 6th year.

My plan is to apply for a Masters in Biology. I know that some schools do take the DAT in Lieu of the GRE and my DAT score is decent. I also think my ECs are decent and workable (Involved with student government, held numerous executive positions on school clubs, over a thousand hours volunteering at various hospitals, competed on my school's esports team and placed top 8 in North America, etc).

I was just wondering what my chances would be for a Masters and if anyone had any suggestions or advice on what I should do. I know it's a little late into the cycle but there are many schools taking applications. I'm currently looking at Western U, West Texas A&M, and Roosevelt. They have lower GPA requirements although I think my GPA would still be an issue there.

Thanks in advance and looking fowards to the replies 🙂

Canadian here. I’d say complete the masters first. At least a year, and then apply. You have a great DAT. Polish up those ECS and score high in your courses.

Can’t apply to Texas schools unless you’re from Texas. Try studying for more than 4 days and get an insane DAT (22 is an amazing score above the 90th percentile mind you). I know there are masters programs with cutoffs of 3.0 gpa to get in, but if you look around I’m sure you’ll find one. You are going to need a really high gpa in the masters and dat to compensate for your undergrad. Also - I believe post bacc can be done to improve your undergrad gpa - someone correct me if I’m wrong on that.

Just being honest- I don’t know of any dental schools that look at an application of a gpa that is below 2.5 unless they only accept in-state applicants.
But congrats on the 22 on the DAT. That is a great score for only studying 4 days!
I recommend a masters program, but I am a little bias because I’m in Barry’s BMS program. I love it here. So many connections and opportunities!!
Def look up Barry for a masters in Biomedical sciences. Rutgers has a good masters program as well. Both are specifically tailored to mimic classes taken in medical & dental school.
But I think any Biomedical masters program will do as long as you have a 3.6 or higher gpa

Good luck!!
