Hello Friends! I'm looking for some help in regards to formulating my final school list, i.e. what schools I should remove/add.My primary concerns are my GPA, and my clinical experience, as although quantitatively it seems like a good amount, it has all come recently as I started a job not long after I graduated early. I wasn't too worried about my non-clinical volunteering as I had been doing it consistently for a long time, but now that I see it, it does seem a bit on the low end. Any feedback is appreciated!
  1. cGPA: 3.57 sGPA: 3.4 General upward GPA trend culminating in a high GPA for the last few semesters.
  2. MCAT: 519 (130/130/129/130)
  3. State of Residence: MA
  4. Ethnicity: Asian
  5. Undergrad Category: Top Tier Non-Ivy University
  6. Clinical experience= 33 hours clinic volunteer (only able to get shifts for one semester), 500 hours Clinical Research Coordinator (recent full-time position started within the last 5 months and continuing for gap year)
  7. Research experience and productivity: 1500 hours basic science research split between home institution, Summer Intern at Pharmaceutical Company, and Summer Scholars Program at another institution (1 poster + abstract)
  8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented: 16 hours (Neurology)
  9. Non-clinical volunteering= 80 hours doing diverse types of service to help the community (total hour not much, but consistent participation for 1.5 years)
  10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc): Continuing Clinical Research Job throughout gap year
  11. Relevant honors or awards: Dean's List, Honors
  12. Anything else not listed you think might be important: Bulk of my clinical experience has come quite recently from my job, but does involve patient interactions.

More volunteering would make your application stronger... you could remove out of state public schools like Rutgers, UMaryland, etc and instead add schools like Miami and Western Michigan

Frankly, so far you look like a person who wants to be a scientist, not a physician. And I am afraid that your GPA is too low for research heavy schools, may be you should take a gap year, and get more service hours if you really want to be a doctor. Your current list includes schools that are very service-oriented.

Your ECs (except research)are really weak. 33 hours clinical experience, 16 hours shadowing and 80 hours nonclinical are ridiculous numbers for someone who claims to want to be a doctor. 500 clinical Research Coordinator sounds more administrative and clinical research usually considers participants as subjects and not patients. You really need to consider a gap year or two to fix your application. Get outside of your comfort zone ( the lab) and work with people that are not like you. How can you possibly know you want to spend the next 35+ years dealing with sick, injured and dying? Oh you also need to shadow a primary care doc for several hours. Your GPAs are lowish but nice job on the MCAT. Why not go for a Ph.D.?
