Hi all,

New member here, long time lurker. So I'm looking for some input into my situation and what are my chances at getting into a Canadian Medical school.

I graduated high school just getting by, went to Niagara College to upgrade myself in Pre-Health Science graduated with Honours then went to Brock University and here is my transcript of my record at Brock:

2009 SPRING
MATH1P97 - WD
PHIL1F94 - 88% A

2009 SUMMER
PHIL2P96 - 90% A

2009/2010 FALL WINTER
BIOL1F90 - 65% C
CHEM1F92 - 50% D
PSYC1F90 - 72% B

2010/2011 FALL WINTER
BIOL2F01 - WD
PHIL2P17 - 0% F
PHIL2P25 - 36% F

Basically I ended up deciding during the first year that I didn't want to do this at this point of my life. The reason for the 0s is and the low marks is simply because I choose not to write exams, I just didn't show up after I studied, decided I do not like this environment. I end up going to Fire School and getting certifide as a firefighter with a 80+% average there.

However I'm not happy now, I want to return to school and complete what I started and go for medicine after all. I've got tons of ECs, and lots of life experience through working, and volunteering. I am not worried about these things. I am only worried about my marks.

I just enrolled and got accepted to Bishop's University and will be starting April 29th.

What do you guys think about my first year marks, is this going to automatically eliminate me from the pool and kill all my chances? Any guidance is highly appreciated.

Thank you.

p.s. my ideal med school would be mcgill.

You probably won't get into McGill. They have quotas for people who aren't from quebec. They accept like 10 OOP every year at most. There are easily 10 people with perfect 4.0 GPAs, 36 MCATs never had a hiccup in their life and have research, pubs, volunteer who want McGill. McGill is a top choice for a lot of people. I wouldn't set my sights on a particular med school. Anything is already godly (this applies to everyone).

I think a lot of Canadian medical schools will look at your top 2 years so it won't kill your chances. If you have great grades in 2 years your Brock experience won't count.

Hmm but I AM a Quebec resident?

I live in Quebec, all my paperwork is quebec, officially I am a resident. Will this improve my chances?

Yeah it definitely will improve your chances. If you are a quebec resident do you speak french? If you do I believe you can consider other Quebec schools. This will dramatically improve your chances. I think you won't have a problem. Just pursue your degree, work hard and you shouldn't have major issues.

Assuming they do extremely well on the MCAT, GPA etc.
