So I have a 10,10,13 (33). I'm debating whether to re-take this or not. My avg was 35, so 33 was within the range.

More in particular, the schools I'm looking into are mainly mid-tier ones (such as Einstein, Jeff, Oregon). My GPA is 3.85, and I was wondering would be be worth the time to re-study for a better score? (36+). Even then I won't be applying to too many top tier schools.

Do you think a better MCAT score will make that much of a difference to the mid-tier schools? If not, I'd rather spend the time on something more meaningful.

Don't retake a 33. Spend your free time reading "A Farewell to Arms."

You're in the 90th %ile...definitely don't retake. If you took it again and did worse (very possible with a 33), then you just shot yourself in the foot. Comparing a 33 and a 35 is splitting hairs.

Like others said, it's a good score and you've landed in the mid/good range of applicants. It doesn't make you one of the godly applicants but it's fine for your purposes. Don't risk a retake.

yeah that's what I thought. but the thought of knowing you can do better haunts me.

Nope. Absolutely don't do it unless you need to. You have a good GPA, and your MCAT isn't going to need to be higher since, as you said you're not really considering top-tier schools. Plus, how are you going to explain retaking a 33 come application season, even if you do improve?

Not worth the risk, IMO.

No.

thanks for the feedback guys. funny how an anonymous forum can settle my uncertainties.

I know a couple people who retook 33s and did a couple points better, but I don't think it's worth the stress of studying and the risk that your score may drop. I got a 33 and ended up getting into my top choice school. It won't keep you out of ANY mid-tier school, and may even get you considered at top schools with your GPA.

If by Oregon, you mean OHSU, then a 33 is more than fine. Even if you are an OOS person you would make the cut-off for "superior academic achievement" which is a 3.65 and 32.

Unless you are from Washington. It seems that people from Oregon don't get into UW and people from Washington have difficulty getting into OHSU. I think there is a little bit of rivalry (or bad blood) going on between the two states. Ha ha.

Just don't expect OHSU to be fast with anything. If anything, they move slightly slower than glaciers. The only thing I am happy with is that they accepted me only slightly more than four weeks post-interview. Most people get put on hold until mid-May. That sucks big time.

That is one amazing book. I liked For Whom the Bell Tolls even more. It changed my view of life and death for the better and at the time when I needed it most.
