I was in the military for 15 years before getting out and looking "professional" was dictated to me. Now I'm almost a year out of the military and between that and school being at my house I have not shaved or cut my hair once. Some would say I look homeless🤣 Now that things are opening back up, I am going to try and get some shadowing hours in. Obviously, I can't look homeless. What in your opinion would look professional?

I am assuming you are a guy (girl probably wouldn’t use “shaving” and “professional” in the same sentence).

trim your beard or shave, get a haircut (you can have long hair - but if you do, still get the cut to style). Dress very well .

Yes, I am a guy. Would you consider a goatee professional? Despite being only 35, most of the beard is white. I feel it ages me pretty hard, so I would want to get rid of most of it. However, I don't want to be clean shaven

It can definitely be professional- a lot of my classmates have beards of different kinds and look very professional. Just make sure it looks very well trimmed .

maybe go to Pinterest and look at professional bearded looks ? This might give you an idea what to look for in a style .

Just look good. Goatee is fine if it is well trimmed. You are trying to get into a conservative field. I have full sleeve tattoos and as a PGY5, ever since starting residency and fellowship, I have let them be uncovered because I have worked in hospitals that allow. But I kept that covered for shadowing and interviews as well as my med school rotations. If you try to blaze trails, you are more likely to burn bridges. Play the game until you get in.

Not to derail the thread, but @FrkyBgStok I like you more and more the more I learn about you. Going from talking about cars to both being tatted up medical individuals (I would have said professionals but you would be the only professional so far as I'm still a student haha).

But back to the original post, I would say just look clean. I grew my beard out for a while and it got to the homeless man point and it was not nice. Especially wearing a mask it gets all disfigured and junk. Do a clean goatee and make sure your hair is not flowing like Aquaman. Also get a gym membership and start to exercise (if you don't already). This will help with keeping things tidy.
