I'm strongly considering attending medical school in Australia and am applying to a handful of schools this cycle while also taking some of the prerequisites for US schools. I lived in Melbourne for about 6 months on a working holiday visa and had a patient-facing job, and really enjoyed my time there, found my quality of life much better than the US in lots of ways, and felt the healthcare system was excellent--especially compared to ours here in the US at this time! At the moment, I want to see how I do with the coursework and keep options open for both, but I'm leaning towards going abroad. I'd really like to hear from people who have done medicine in Australia as an international student and stayed post-graduation to do their training there.
I know finding an internship has not been a problem for most, but post-internship, have you felt limited in what career paths you could pursue?
I don't see myself desiring a competitive specialty whether I stay in the US or go abroad and have an interest in primary care/general practice, but I'd like to have options to pursue something else if I am interested in it. I'm interested in psychiatry, but I've heard that has become very competitive in Victoria these days.
If I want to make research a significant portion of my career and work in academic medicine, would this be possible? Would it depend on me going to an urban school like USyd, Monash, or Uni Melb? I have an MPH and significant research experience in the US and see myself wanting to continue to do public health work and research.
How much of a barrier has being a non-citizen/non-resident, or being an immigrant in general, been for you? Do you feel like it has affected how you've been treated in the hospital or made it harder to build relationships with patients? Would especially like to hear from other POC.
For those who took out loans, how much of a hardship has that been?
