Hi there, my name is Connor. I'm 17 from New York and would eventually like to get into the Health field. Not quite sure what I'll go into as a specialty yet but I have interests in neuroscience, pharmacueticals, biochem, endocrinology, and possibly cardiology.

I was wondering if anyone could explain the pros/cons of these fields. Or if you are already in one of them, how do you like it? what are your daily responsibilities? etc.

Thanks,
Connor.

I can't really answer your question directly because I don't know all that much about the specific fields you mentioned, but I would recommend trying to talk with some people that work in these fields. Maybe your parents know a neurologist or cardiologist. Maybe you can talk to a teacher at your school who can give you the hook-up for some shadowing opportunities. That'll probably give you the best view of what each of those fields has to offer.

Good Idea. I also think you should look into psychiatry. I think neurology is big in that field and should be combined with psychology. Plus, it is relatively new. So, you won't have a problem being interested. That's why I want to be a psychiatrist anyway.

Your best bet is to shadow those fields of work
you can find out how to do this by calling a local hospital
Oh yah, Welcome to SDN! :D

Thanks for all the responses!

Futura - I will deffinetely look into psychiatry as a field, the mind is an interesting machine.

I'm thinking about shadowing my Pediatrict Specialist this summer, how would I go about doing this? Do I just write him an email and ask if I can shadow him for the summer? Does shadowing mean I just follow him around and observe a few days a week?

Pretty much yea for both. Or call him.

Shadow different careers. Contact your school counselor for it.

Or just call around. Im interested in podiatry, so I first asked my own podiatrst, who I've known from my broken toe. He already let me watch a surgery (bunionectomy) with him and I'll be watching more surgeries and shadowing him in his office inthe coming week. I also googled podiatrist (then my city name) and a buncha listings came up. I called I think around 6, and 2 agreed for me to shadow them. I'll be shadowing them later this week and next. Im sure it works the same for the different professions of the health care field.
