Some schools give you the name of your interviewer before the interview. I'm a little confused about how to use any information I find out about them....do people generally make it known that they know something about their interviewer (research, professional involvement, etc...)?

Any thoughts appreciated....

I never made it known. But if I for example, I knew my interviewer was an obgyn or a ped, I'd tailor my answers to show my interest in his field. Or I would highlight my activities that dealt with women's health or kids or infertility. Plus, I would make sure I knew my infertility research down cold since the topic would probably dominate the conversation.

Also, if you look at your interviewer's resume and research interests, you can say, "well i find blah blah blah facinating" and wait for your interviewer to say "hey.... what a coincidence...". It makes me feel more confident about the interview and I don't have to worry that the interviewer and I will be staring blankly at eachother for 30 minutes.

while walking over to the interviewer's lab or clinic, i usually call my dad at the hospital and have him google the name of my interviewer so i can fill in the awkward pauses with meaningful questions.
