hi all,

As I am gearing up to apply to medical school this upcoming June, I am in the process of collecting my recommendations.

Specifically, as I graduated from my undergrad several years prior, I was advised to take additional courses because it had been sometime since I had graduated; in addition, I wanted to strengthen my academic record so that I could maximize my chances of getting into medical school, and hopefully, a top one.

I have letters of recommendation from a professor from my undergrad and 3 work/research experience ones. As I am doing my postbac at my local state school ( I went to a prestigious private that regrettably costs $5k per class), I would like to know if it would be alright that I get a LOR from a professor at the local state school ( I excelled in his class and he offered me a rec). Given that the state school has a much less competitive student body than my undergrad, I would like to know if this rec would harm my app despite excelling in the course?

The reason I am taking courses at the state school and not at a school equal or more competitive than my undergrad is because I am extremely limited in finances ( I am from an impoverished background and will be applying as disadvantaged).

In regards to the academic metrics, I have a high mcat ( 40+ old) and a very strong upward trend in my grades ( 3.47 gpa) with mostly A's in my upper division sciences ( Biochem, Biophysics, etc) with the lowest being a B( in cell and molec after a killer final :/).

I would like to know if this LOR would still be useful and helpful for my application despite getting it from a professor ( who is also the chair of the department) from a less prestigious school.

Thank you!

I feel like it would be unusual if you didn't include a letter from your post-bacc.

Will your MCAT still be valid next cycle?

Thank you for your response!

This cycle is the last cycle where my MCAT is valid ( based on the aamc mcat policies for each school).

The only reason why I am concerned about the LOR is because I dont want ADCOMs to get the impression that I went to an easier school to get an LOR (less competition etc).

Would this still be okay? I'm doing an DIY postbac.

No one will care about that. You'll be fine. And since you're doing a post-bac its expected that your letters from the post-bac will be stronger as you're expected to be doing stronger in the post-bac than undergrad. Source: self/same situation.

If there's one thing I've learned through this process its that no one cares about your letters really. They should be strong and they should be there. Other than that, its all the same.

Also, I get that AAMC says that its valid- but I applied this year because its up to schools individually whether they'll accept the old mcat and most schools I was interested in (~20 schools) would not accept the old MCAT for this upcoming cycle. Make sure you check teh school's requirements before you waste your money on an app they won't accept!

A letter from a recent professor is a good idea.
The prestige of the school matters little.

Sorry to piggyback off this thread but what happens if I don't have any letters from senior year?
Will it pose an issue to not have letters from senior year? I think I would get the strongest letters from professors from soph/jr year.

It is more important that you have letters from those who know you well and can speak to your strengths, challenges and personal qualities.

Yeah I think on MSAR every school will list the last MCAT date they take. Hopefully you don't have to retake your MCAT!
