I have been shadowing an MD for couple of years now. I was wondering if I want to apply to Midwestern University (DO program) does it matter if I use the LOR my MD doctor writes me? Or should I shadow a DO and get a letter from a DO instead? What would improve my chances in getting into Midwestern? Can somebody help me clarify this? Someone who goes to MWU in IL what LOR's did you guys use? MD or DO?

Let them know you are interested in applying to this school next year and are looking for an alumni to shadow in <enter city name> in <field of medicine here>.

Look at their requirements. Doesn't matter.

MWU seemed to be one of the DO schools that didn't care all that much. However, everyone I interviewed with seemed to have some DO work/shadowing.

So I started shadowing DO this month and I think I will be getting a letter from him in may. I have very less amount of hours but then again the MD doctor I have shadowed over 1000+ hours so I am sure he will write me a better letter than the DO. Can I submit both MD and DO LORs in my application? just wondering what will improve my chances?

1000+ hours of shadowing? Why on earth would you spend that much time shadowing? 900 of those hours could have been used for paid clinical work etc...

They don't seem to mind too much, I got in with an MD letter only

I have to agree. That's like 42 24 hour days. Why didn't this applicant use his time to volunteer or do something with his time to benefit others and not just himself?

Well it was built up over the period of 4 years with the 1000+ hours but my question is that can I submit both LORs from a DO as well as an MD?

Still.. 1000hrs/4 years = 250hrs/yr = 250/52 = 5 hrs per week. After a while didn't you think it might be more relevant to use that time to volunteer or work?

I'm just baffled that you could forgo that much time haha. Good job though :S

Thank you! lol but I did other volunteer work as well not just shadowing just wondering can I submit both LORs from MD and a DO to a DO school?
