Hey guys. Can anyone tell me how bad it is to apply for the HPSP without a letter of recommendation from a dentist? I didn't use one for my dental school application, and I used the same people for my HPSP application.

Now that the Dec 21st deadline is nearly here, I found out that this might be very damaging to my chances of being selected. I e-mailed my recruiter, but he has not gotten back to me yet.

I would love some insight from anyone who might have some experience with this.

Thanks in advance.

My recruiter has told me that it is "not necessary" to obtain a letter from a dentist. I'm still concerned though. Any insight would be appreciated.

I didn't get a letter of recommendation from a dentist when I applied for HPSP. I don't think it is a very big deal. The HPSP selection committee is probably more interested in your potential as an Officer. That's not really something they can get from a letter from some dentist you shadowed.

I see from your profile link that you exceeded the norm for an Army HPSP applicant in both GPA and DAT (Nice job btw). That wouldn't be the case for me. Do you think the average applicant can still have a good chance without the dentist letter?

Of course I have not served on an HPSP selection committee, but I really don't think it is that big of a deal. It's not a requirement, and honestly, what would that letter possible have to say about you that would make them think that you would be a good Officer? I just don't think it will add anything all that meaningful to your application. I don't know if it is the same with the Army, but the Navy required me to interview with two active duty Dental Officers (one in person and one over the phone). I imagine that those interviews are WAY more important than that letter since they actually know what you are getting yourself into and what it takes.
