LoR IM subspecialty

If I get a LoR from an IM subspecialty, would that fulfill the requirement from say the UTMB website of: "Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from the Chair (or designee) of your Department of Medicine, official transcript, and at least two letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be from an internist. The letters need to state that the writer has directly observed the applicant. The letters must also address clinical competency and medical knowledge."

You basicallly need 3 LOR

1. the chair letter (your school does that for you) ask around to make sure that they will though
2. a letter from an internist specifically
3. the LOR from your IM subspecialist


4. A 4th LOR from another field or another internsit if possible. (You only need 3 LOR total, but some places want a fourth)

I see so an IM subspecialist does not fulfill the internist requirement, I assumed they meant someone who was board certified in internal medicine.
Also follow up question states that LOR from subi ICU or IM is highly suggested, would a subI be more or less required to attend here then? Or are they talking about a LOR from any subi IM or ICU.

I would say the IM sub specialist should count towards an IM letter. By definition, a IM sub specialist (eg cardiologist) is also a IM physician bc they had IM residency training.

Go with whatever letter that’s the strongest.
