The story:
I took this professor a few years ago for an intro class and we never spoke (only email) and I got less than a B in the class. Flashforward to now.
I recently took an upper level class with the prof and aced the class. And I spoke to this prof after nearly every class.
The dilemma: At my school, its amazing if you are able to get a LOR from this prof. I asked if he could write one for me. The response asked if I took the intro class with him and if so, WHEN I did. (but NOT the grade). To my classmates, its an accomplishment not to get a no thanks immediately.
Will he check the transcript database and see that crummy grade from a few years back? Or does he just want to know for the letter?
