LOR writers-- thank you notes?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think so.

I always left a handwritten card and still would. Being handwritten, it shows that you took the time out of your schedule to appreciate them taking time out of their schedule to do yourself a favor. In the past (and in general), people who've handwritten me thank-you notes always stood out. IMO, it's one of those dying trends, especially with all the technology out there. You never know when you'll need their help again (job searching, connections, etc.)

I gave thank u cards regardless of what others say. If you think abt what they are doing for you and other students by writing out lors its pretty significant. They are taking time out of their hectic and crazy schedules that will help your career, not theirs, and without it we can't be docs here.

It also says a lot to me, since it took me a year to figure out and actually sit down to write my personal statement.😀

I sent my LOR writers all a brief 2 paragraph thank-you email, individually composed, one talking about how they helped me find my way as a physician and the other where I matched and what my future plans are. It shows you put some thought and effort into it, and they will be able to read it because my penmanship is horrible.

What if you already gave them a thank you note at the end of the rotation? Maybe a second note or email once the letter is received at your school to let them know the school received it and to thank them again?

Card at least. Anything else is just an excuse for laziness imo. It's a pain writing lor's (I've done it before)...show you actually took time to do something in return.

In addition I gave most of them small mementos (the ones who also served as advisors or 'surrogate' advisors) and wrote emails keeping them updated of my progress as I said I would in their notes. This stuff isn't really necessary imo.

I think absolutely yes. They're taking the time to write an entire gushy letter about you, you should at least write a 3-sentence card.

imagine you're a busy attending and 10 students came to you, all needing a personalized recommendation in 3 weeks..........:

The fact that others have done it for us.......says a lot
