hi, i know we've kind of talked about LORs already, but I have a question. i'm in a bit of a dilemna because of the fact that we can only send in a max of 4 LORs. i have two attendings at my home program who are willing to write absolutely outstanding LORs for me. they probably know me better than any other attendings i have worked with in any rotations in med school. however, they are both from the same group, and will probably say close to the same thing about me. neither are "big wigs," but they know lots of people in the area i am applying in.

on the other hand, i did research and published two retina papers with a big wig attending at columbia univ over the summer of my first year--he doesn't know me that well and has never seen me in the clinic, but he'll be able to vouch for my research skills.

third, i am planning to do a 6 week research elective at Wills early this summer with a world-famous person, and i am planning to ask him for a letter and send it in as my 4th letter (again, this will be mostly a research letter from someone who doensn't know me that well, but he is world famous and i'm only doing the rotation to get a letter from him and increase my chances of matching at Wills).

i feel like i want to just send in these 4 ophtho letters, but it seems like we have to send in one from one of our core rotations too. i am getting a letter from my surgery attending, since that's pretty much the only big rotation i have honored. but that letter will just be so-so, i didn't particularly click with him. so basically, i have to drop one letter--any advice on what to do?

Welcome to the forum! Unless something has changed, the core rotation letter is encouraged, not required. I was in your exact same position when I was applying; I ended up sending 4 ophtho letters and matched OK.

Good luck!
