Hey guys,

Wondering if you can help me out with a dilemma. I am in the process of getting a committee letter from my undergrad and I already have 3 LoRs from last year when I started the process but did not apply. Even though its been a year, I still want to use those letters for my committee letter. Additionally, I started a new gap year job in December and while I could add more LORs, I don't feel like it would be a good letter due to the deadline for LoRs for the committee letter being early March. Instead I was planning on sending the committee letter with the initial LoRs separately from the gap year LOR in June/July so it would be a better letter due to spending more time at the job. I asked my premed advisor and she was against the idea. What do you guys think?

You probably won't get a strong letter from people you've only worked with for a couple months, which is when you'd have to ask for the letter in order for it to be completed for you for March. I'd ignore the adviser and send the work supervisor letter in the Fall

Are you saying you want to have the job LOR in the committee letter or that you intend to send it separately to medical schools? Is the job academically, clinically, or community service oriented? If you want to make it part of your committee letter, then having it noted along with all other items that you are currently working in X capacity, it may be find. But as solid separate LOR, I dont see that much impact. More importantly, I would ask for updated letters from your LOR writers from last year

The LoR is from the PI in the lab I work for. The lab I work for is in one of the medical schools that I am applying for so I thought it would be a good letter to have. I don't care if the letter is part of the committee letter or separate I just want it to be the strongest it could be which will probably occur if it was just separate since the deadline for including LoR in my undergrad committee letter is early march. Also, I was thinking about asking for an updated letter but all my professors are notoriously hard to reach (takes a couple weeks to respond) and honestly don't think there's anything new they would say about me. Do you think I should still ask anyway? Thanks for the advice!
