Hey everyone. Im currently a junior undergrad, recently decided to switch to pre-pt. I want to apply in this upcoming cycle for DPT school. However, I'm a little concerned about my pre-req situation. I was pre-med, so I've taken pretty much every pre-med course. The common ones I'm missing are anatomy, physiology, statistics, and maybe one more for most schools.

Can someone shed some light as to how DPT programs will view pre-req courses that haven't been completed by the time of application? Was anyone accepted having a few pre-reqs incomplete? Im debating on taking a few in the summer if it will be a problem.

Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure I already answered this for you... Anyway, most schools only allow 2 pre-reqs to be in progress during the spring of the year you are applying for. Most of the time, they allow 1 science and 1 non science pre req such as anatomy and statistics. For your case, you would be allowed to take 2 (1 science and 1 non science) pre reqs during the spring of 2016. It is also important to note that this can vary depending on the school you are applying to. It is within your best interest to finish all your pre reqs before spring of 2016 for that is the cutoff for most schools. This would give you the best potential shot at an acceptance.

Thanks. I keep seeing different deadlines so I'm just confused. Thanks again and sorry for the double post.

It's best to have all of your prerequisites done, but as mentioned, you can have one or two outstanding. Are you done with physics, chemistry, and psychology? If so, you should be able to finish easily by spring - take anatomy or physiology over the summer, then finish with the other + statistics in fall semester. Or take two courses in the fall, one in the spring, and while it won't help you, it probably won't kill your application either.

I was accepted to two schools and waitlisted at a third with some physics outstanding, so it is possible.

Yeah I've taken physics, chemistry, and psychology. It looks like no pre-reqs I need are offered in the summer...so I guess I'll try to get them done in the fall/spring.

It really depends on the program. There is no strict 2 outstanding pre-req requirement. I applied to schools that only require 50% of classes be complete by time of application, others require all but 2, and everything in between. All require that pre-reqs be complete by matriculation. Some schools are lenient about the requirement, while others are strict. Make contact and get information straight from the administrator.

The more you have done by the time your app gets reviewed, the better. Your pre-req GPA means more if you've taken more classes.

At the same time, do as the other posters have suggested and find out what the specific policies of each school you want to apply to are.

You may be able to find one of the courses at a community college if you are set on getting a class knocked out over the summer. Or you could take three classes in the fall, if you are allowed to take anatomy and physiology concurrently. If neither of those is an option, you will have one outstanding (if you take two classes) in the spring. While it's best to have them all done, I don't think it's a deal breaker to have one left if your grades and everything else are strong. At the very least, it's something you have limited control over once you determine your schedule, and isn't worth investing too much worry into.
