So here I am completely excited and happy. I was so happy when I found out that I was offered an interview at MSU, especially since I am an out of state resident. I then go home to find out two hours later that TUCOM offered me an interview. The following day, I received a letter from UHS. This all happened starting on Wednesday. I am having an awesome week. i can't remember ever being this happy.

So on to the aggravating part. Apparently, mail has been lost and stolen in my neighborhood and we have an incompetent mailman who delivers some of my mail to my neighbors. Neighbors are complete punks - it's a package, it looks extremely important ...just drive down and put it in my mailbox please, these people are inconsiderate. I drop off their mail when they have their mail in my mailbox.

The problem: I was waiting for secondaries, and some schools do not inform you by email that they have sent you a secondary. I finally broke down and called and had to beat around the bush explaining that mail has been lost and missing and was curious if they had mailed me anything. Apparently, two schools informed me that they had sent me secondaries and were happy to send me another one.

Problem two: Is there any nice way to find out if I have been mailed an interview at any of the few schools left?

Thanks! Now that I think about this, maybe I should have started withthe negative and ended with the positive. But overall, I am totally happy, ecstatic and excited.

Oh and Problem 3: I need to find a way to become a Michigan resident FAST!!! So....here is a California girl proposing marriage to any single MICHIGAN MALE. Would you like to marry me?

Good luck to all of those applying.

Do the same thing for the schools that you have completed secondaries for - call them and tell you have missing mail, and was wondering if an invite was sent but never received.

I wonder if that is like marrying someone to obtain your green card.

scubadiva, I had the same concern as you. I kept getting other people's mail in my mailbox, so I could only assume other people were getting my mail too. It really sucks. Fortunately, the people in my apartment complex are pretty good about that (maybe because they know if they screw someone with their mail, they can also get screwed too....who knows).

Calling schools to check on your status, etc. is fine. Some schools, however, have a specific day of the week set aside only for answering applicants' questions. If you call them on a different day, they can get pretty ornery (personal experience). My advice: if you call a school, when they answer the phone NEVER say something like "Hi, this is Jane Doe. I'm calling to check this or that...". Never say your name right away. Just say "Hi. I'm calling to check on my ..." and if they get ornery or pissy because it's not the right day just apologize, say you'll call on the appropriate day / time and hang up. That way they don't know who called and cannot grab your file and put a big, fat "X" in it.

By the way, if you ask a school if you got an interview invite because your mail is unreliable, don't forget to mention to them how interested you're in their school and that's why you're checking personally. Good luck! (both with med school and marriage 😉 )

Hey Shinken,

Thanks for the advice. That's a great tip on how NOT to irritate the admissions office.

By the way, just by my nature, I guess I just automatically say hi without mentioning my name and first telling them the problem at hand, and then I know they'll ask me my name.

Just curious, but which schools are anal retentive about calling? I know that MSU was very specific on when they could be contacted and how they should be contacted. I followed their instructions carefully.

Well, D.O. schools are different. Their admissions people are generally very helpful and nice, so no problems there. Some allopathic schools, however, are not the same. U. of Illinois requires you to call on Thursdays only to check the status of your application. My bad experience was with Rush Medical College in Chicago. They only take status checks on Fridays, and I called on a Wednesday (I didn't know...it's on the instructions for completing the secondary, but after the 10,000 secondary you don't read those so closely). They were pretty rude and short on the phone. All D.O. schools I've applied to are OK so far. It's funny, but some admissions offices don't realize that although applicants are trying to sell themselves to the schools, the schools also have to try to sell themselves to the applicants.

I sometimes assume that people apply to both types of schools. If you only applied D.O. then you're probably fine. I have yet to meet an osteopathic admissions office person that I didn't like.
