I know you asked about 3.5x and higher but I thought I would throw in the fact that I use 3.0x and they are amazing. I am farsighted so things in detail are difficult for me. I have found that since I am just starting out the 3.0x is good because you can still see the recommended 3-5 teeth and still see a little more detail than your neighbor.

was it worth the investment? i'm still considering whether to buy them or not...i'm a D1. trying to decide if i should spend the 1K or not

Yeah what Drtacoelf said- that is why I went with the 3.0x- you get a good field view but can also see details... well worth it!

i talked with a DFV rep.

2.5X is $850

LED light $675

these prices are student discounted prices? does it sound like a good deal

i searched the forums and read about some ppl buying cheaper loupes but they stopped using them because they didn't like them or their quality was bad..
how do you buy online? don't you have to get fitted for them ?
do you like your med-lites? what magnification did u go for?

Design for vision seems to be one of the best brands out there; and i'm thinking since i'll be using loupes all the time might as well get a good one instead of buying another one later on.

I'm meeting with the DFV rep later this week and going to decide b/w 2.5 or 3.5 EF

Worth every penny. I can't even do a prophy without my loupes. I have 2.5x DFV. If I get another set it will be a big jump to one of the high mags for endo and other procedures.

So far they are great. I know they are new, but I love'em. Yes I bought them off the website and they were here in three days.

No you do not have to be fitted, they are adjustable, Just like the $1000 okley flip downs.

I heard about med-lite on Dental Town. A dentist there has been using them for years, he/she sweared by them.

Why get a cheap pair? What is your working distance? What magnification is best for you? Don't know? Neither do I, really. I am learning, I have no idea what I really need until I spend more time in the sim lab. After I know what I like and need I will sell my med-lites (IF TTLs ARE SOOOO much better) on ebay essentailly for what I payed for them, becuase they are not custom, but adjustable and buy a nice TTL pair.

As for what I went with, 3.0x with 17" working distance. Already wishing I went with the 21". But hey, they are a learning pair, that was the whole idea.

I know the other companies make good products, but the reason EVERONE gets'em is becuase the reps are HARD AT WORK every week selling you that thiers are better. Med-lite is chillin in the cut, not paying 10000 reps to 15 bucks an hour to sell you on thier product. Which by the way who think pays that 15 bucks an hour? DFV? or do you think maybe, just maybe they pack that into that oh, so, sweet G you spent on your pretty new loupes?

Food For Thought,

I spent a grand on DFV loupes as a freshman and in the last four years, I have used them maybe 5 times. IMO clinical dentistry does not require loupes as the norm (only under certain circumstances). I had a few guys in my class who were so dependent on their loupes that when they needed to send them in to get fixed, they couldn't perform in clinic. I do not want to be a slave to the loupes. (I actually only use them now to do labwork-marginating, fitting crowns, etc).
If you buy them I would only buy the ones fixed in the lenses, not the flip-up kind. They are heavier, hinges loosen over time, and more moveable parts=more chance of them breaking

How do you get around not hunching over? Does your back and neck hurt at the end of the day?

would you recommend loupes for improving posture ? less crouching, less back/neck pain?
i'm waiting for the DFV rep to come to my school, and going to see how they help, they have a 45 day return policy too

Ya, I went with the DFV. I think it really helped improve my posture. It would seem to me that you would almost have to be kissing your patient to get the same detail without them on. Others in my class that have not got them yet are always bent over. But everyones different.

that's good news; i think i'll enjoy lab a bit more w/o the neck pain...i'm also going for DFV, because i've heard they're one of the better brands out there...can i know what magnification you have on your loupes?

I went with the 2.5x. That's what I've always heard is the way to go especially starting out. I went with the titanium frames and they are nice and light as well. 👍
