Howdy all--

I just got a grant/scholarship to purchase equipment that i need for residency. The only thing I need to get is loupes, but I don't know much about them. Any recommendations as far as brand, magnification, working distance, etc? I can spend between 500-800 or so for them.

My vision is essentially 20/20, so I don't think I need custom-made ones. And where the heck do I even go to get them? We don't have an ophtho dept. here , or I would go ask them! Any advice appreciated.

Heine makes a very nice set of loupes (2.3x) for around $300. I'm plano too, and these are all I ever needed

Come to think of it, I've actually tried on those Heine ones (a peds ophtho attending had them). They seemed allright at the time (in the 30 seconds I had them on!)

I realize that this is a matter of opinion, but how important is it to get the *really* good loupes? Is the difference really that noticeable (i.e, worth an extra 500-700 bucks?).

Just curious for your thoughts.

If someone else is paying for them, get the Designs for Vision ones. If you think you want to do occuloplastics, get them as well. Otherwise, save your money and buy the cheaper pair. 😀

In my case, it was a question of "how likely am I to lose this expensive item I just bought?" Answer: very likely, so I bought the cheapies.

Nobody likes Keeler?

In some residencies, nobody or only 1-2 residents have loupes. In others, many more have them. I've made good use of mine.
