So I just want to see which candidate's chances are higher.

+ Candidate #1 has a 3.5 GPA + 4 W's (earned during the first semester of college).

+ Candidate #2 has a 3.9 + 9 W's (earned during the first 2 years of his/her academic career).

+ Candidate #3 has a 3.0 GPA + 0 W's.

Let's assume they all have the same DAT score and very good EC's as well as LOR's. So whose chances do you think are higher than whose?

1>2>3 would be my guess.

i cant believe i dont know this, but sorry what are W's again?

W = Withdraw From Class Without Grade.

1>2>3

I would guess.

9 W's are pretty bad though. I would hope the person would have a good reason for so many W's.

withdraws seem bad to me ..i feel as tho it shows you cant handle school or cant manage all of the thngs you take on. i think the candidate with 0 and 4 withdraws are are close in comparison because of GPA...but the 3.9 person is a bad applicant with 9 withdraws..my school only allows 5 so is this even possible

I had 6 W's, and I think that's pretty close to the upper limit that you can have without some red flags going up. Another very important questions is about what the W's were from, one of mine was from a piano class, and two were from PE classes that didn't end up working out in my schedule.

Though, I think someone who is going to get a D in say, Ochem would be much better off taking the W and retaking - I'm sure schools would much rather see that.

Though, remember that it's not like they've got a big sign on the top of your application that says "THIS GUY HAS 9 W's!!!!" So, if they're evenly spread, of at least more or less contained, it won't look as bad.

2>1>3

GPA gets u the interview. 3.9 will get u a lot of interviews even with the 9 Ws. the problem comes during the interview when u have to explain yourself.

This is all theoretical. What if those 9 W's were for deaths in the family or something?

You should have neither a low GPA nor many W's.

I will pick 3.9 GPA with 9 Ws first.
Secondly, 3.5 GPA with 4 Ws
Finally, 3.0 GPA with 0 W
Remember you are talking about 0.4-0.9 GPA and 4-5 Ws in difference. 😎
W is still better than a C.

2 > 1 > 3..... GPA gets you into interviews.

Well....

What if number three had a 30 DAT, Number two was published in "Cell" as an undergrad, and number one founded a free dental clinic in Africa that has now turned into a foundation and spread into several other countries also? What then?
