What if you are so good-looking you intimidate your interviewers? 😀

That would suck. Girls are pretty jealous of other girls so if a very pretty girl was interviewing and a "decent" looking lady was the interviewer and all the guys were hooing and hawing she may not give as good marks on her file.

I think looks play a very important role in getting accepted into a school. As someone said previously, you're more inclined to request services from a fit/healthy medical professional then someone who is out of shape, pimple faced, etc.

It's a sad but true reality. Looks consume people's opinions of one another.

That is so true, some women feel very threatened... it might be a good idea to maybe not look your best on interview day haha!

As for the minority thing.... they should count Swedish as a minority 😉 it would help me out -I doubt they have too many in pharm school.

+pissed+So true!!!! Argh if only I'd known this 2 years ago, my life wouldn't have devolved into such a disaster. Girls get soooo jealous of each other then they start to manipulate things. Girls get jealous of girls that are jealous of them! Endless circle of jealousy :bang::bang::bang:x10000. Innocent bystanders in the middle of it all get blindsided by a hurricane of :bang:

If I ever come across any of the cues, words, or hints of this whole girl-girl jealousy ever again ... I'm running away ASAP and not looking back. Ugh, it annoys me just thinking of all the lies and manipulation.

Technically I'm 1/2 Swedish b/c of my dad's side... that'd be cool if Sweds were considered a minority, but it seems Americans typically generalize what exactly Caucasian and "White" are. People never ask me "what I am," they just assume I'm white, but that's really not the case.

Word of advice, stay away from girls. Don't have "girls night out", don't tell girls ANY information about you, not even BASIC information that's obvious from looking at you... and I'm serious. Us girls know how to twist and manipulate any situation to make it "believable". I haven't been friends with any "girls" per say in a few years. I'd much rather be friends with guys and do "tom boy" things then deal with drama drama drama. I don't need my girlfriends holding my hand while I shop or tell me about their day, because frankly I don't care. I'm a very compassionate friend who will go to the end of the world to help another friend, but jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any girl that I've ever been friends with has one way in another back stabbed me to the point of no return. Girls are NOT to be trusted... and who's to say guys are, but guys are so much more simple minded. None of the mind games and stuff (well in friendships at least)....

Well, to be fair... the OP never came back to discuss with the few of us who tried to stay on topic 🙂

I choose not to stay away from girls. Drama or no drama, they're just so gosh darn pretty.

Yes! :bang::bang: Lesson learned too late ...

Which is why certain UC's have almost no minorities (e.g. UCLA and the african american acceptance rate was about 2%, ~250 out of 12,189 entering students). I don't think they even consider minority status for admissions. California's Proposition 209 banned preferential treatement of race, sex, or ethnicity for admissions consideration back in the mid-to-late 90's. I believe Michigan is another state that banned affirmative action(?). Maybe its an issue in Arizona ... nicolesm and rxlea are from the AZ area.

As far as I have read about and witnessed through attending the Florida private and public college system, the "One Florida" initiative created by Jeb Bush actually increased the level of diversity in Florida's higher education. I'm pretty sure there is no affirmative action in this state, but even my private undergrad and grad school are ranked in the top 5-10 as far as diversity. Granted, Florida is already a very racially diverse state, but it seems to me like the number of accepted minority students is pretty representative of the number of qualified students that apply in the first place. Plus Florida Bright Futures is available to anyone with a halfway decent SAT and GPA. It's either a 3/4 or full scholarship depending on your stats, but the cut offs aren't that high. This applies to tuition at any state university, or the equivalent of state tuition at a private school. It's funded through the Florida Lottery.

I don't have friends that are girls. Only guys. I get along much better with them as long as they are not scrubby, impolite guys. I typically get along well with foreigners and dorky guys.

I think appearances also has a lot to do with it. A beautiful person will have more doors open for them. Supposedly, stats say judges are more lenient to good looking people so I imagine adcoms are like that too. They're looking for model candidates, so if Mr. or Mrs. Tubby, who are so wide they have half their buttocks hang out when they sit in a chair, adcoms might wonder if they can best represent the healthcare community. I have heard patients are also more likely to follow the advice of doctors who also look healthy and good.

Well being within a healthy BMI and looking presentable is a lot more controllable than someone's race. I understand that some people are considered to have eating disorders in which they need treatment to learn a healthy relationship with food and lose weight, but in general I don't feel bad that health professionals are judged based on their ability to control their own health. Now, I agree that if an especially attractive girl for example, is being interviewed by male student volunteers than she may get a special advantage because they want pretty girls at their school (I've actually heard a pharmacy student admit to this) but as far as being generally healthy I think that is important.

There's a lot of girl v. girl contempt in this thread.

Jesus Christ, this thread is just depressing and the epitome of everything I find bothersome when it comes to female-female interactions. What sad immature and just plainly disturbing things some of you guys say! All this stuff about jealousy, manipulation, lies and betrayal to me sounds like some crap straight out a teenage drama or some Gilmore girls show. :scared:

You really honestly think that an ADULT interviewer or a faculty member at a prestigious acclaimed university would be intimidated by an interviewee's looks and let that somehow factor into their admittance? Are you for real? 😕 You really think everyone is this VAIN, self-conscious and immature so that they would view every attractive woman as a threat?

What an appalling way to think !

speaking of which, in a world where most adults, even scientists, believe or pretend to believe in imaginary beings, fairies, and the like, the line of thinking on this thread is much more palatable and in tune with reality than you may want to admit to yourself.

how's that for hijacking the hijackers LOL?

Who believes in fairies 😕

I accidentally unleashed an avalanche of emotion with my joke about good-looks. Whoops.

Not really sure how I may not want to admitt something to myself that I find utterly ridiculous and disturbing.

I don't know, if I was the interviewer, working for a school, I'd be interested in admitting an applicant that is well rounded, accomplished, that is dedicated to helping a local community and reaching out to the public, that will make a fine graduate of the said school and contribute something to the profession of pharmacy. I'd be interested in helping select and train the next generation of pharmacists, just like I've sworn when I took the oath of a pharmacist. I would not be worried or intimidated if the interviewee in front of me is better or worse looking than my ancient self. That's a sad way to think.

Since this is turning into another random offtopic hijacked thread, thought I'd try out one of the random smilies for the heck of it.

Most of my friends are girls. But I usually talk to only one girl at a time unless I'm meeting her friends and we are hanging out. Then some guys at school will just stare and make a big deal because I'm hanging out with 5-6 girls.

But yeah, I've heard about how girls can be so mean to each other. I've heard a lot about it from high school and also from college.

I should tell another story and have you guys guess it. lol

Today after 😴ing, I got up to eat some :spam:. This time, I didn't have to :poke: it to see if it was :boom:. I knew right away that I wouldn't :barf: after lunch. It was a +pity+ that I didn't get to enjoy it since I wasn't :soexcited: about it. I remembered that on the last time, I was +pissed+, because I got :slap:ed because of some :bullcrap: with random people. lol

LoL, I don't know about interviewers/faculty and all this jealousy stuff. I suppose that'd be a little unprofessional.

I'm just speaking about peer-peer interactions. It really was like a drama straight out of some teenage drama tv show . And getting caught inbetween everything = :uhno:. Shocking experience...

Just because most of my friends are guys does not mean I don't like girls (hell, I date girls!) LOL. I just don't have a lot in common with the bleach-blonde, paris hilton wannabes that live in my city who might as well be hookers because they dress and act the part. I never experienced the girl-girl competition/jealousy stuff in high school or college. Not even amongst my sorority sisters during undergrad. I am just saying that I have a lot more in common with guys these days. Perfect examples: I hate shopping, cooking, and cheesy romance flicks. Now you might saying I am stereotypical but these stereotypes come from somewhere and in my city (scottsdale), they are right on! So how is what I am saying immature?

That was a weak hijack. Chebs has seniority... plus her post was more entertaining. LOL

Besides... fairies? :wtf:

LOL Sometimes I purposefully don't quote other people so no one gets offended. I really don't try to be mean or offensive, but I just can't help commenting. I just leave it as a general comment for the thread.

Sometimes it is difficult to tell, especially when there are a lot of people commenting on a specific topic. So, my bad. sheesh.

sorry, i didn't want to grant allah, jah, zeus, whoever the monopoly so i included the woodland nymphs which i'm sure still hold court in some parts of the world.

the salient point was that when things beyond the ridiculous are mainstream, more natural tendencies, such as personal biases based on looks, shouldn't surprise anyone, regardless of the occupation and tasks at hand of the involved parties

LMAO @ the woodland nymphs...I think those actually exist :laugh::laugh:

EDIT: I am totally kidding BTW

I was kidding...🙂

I actually do believe that most people develop some level of superior maturity as they age, opposed to the view points that a teenager or younger person would have. Ultimately human nature is still going to prevail... BUT I would expect a mature professional to work past any knee jerk reactions they initially have about an applicant rather than letting it cloud their better judgment.

See, I believe people are inherently good and try to act to the best of their judgement, not the worst.

I already posted above, as an interviewer and a faculty, I would want the best most qualified people to attend the university I work for. It would be in my best interest to be educating the best and the brighest, wouldn't it ?

As a pharmacist you take the oath to train the next generation of pharmacist and the oath is to be taken seriously. To suggest that a mature adult whose best interest is to select the most qualified candidate would somehow be threatened by an interviewer's good looks and dismiss them because of their appearance is ludicrious.

Just like I would never feel threatened by an 18 year old, somehow I highly doubt a 50 year old interviewer would be threatened a 25 year old.

Somebody tell me Asian is a minority.

god i wish cuz i'm asian

I go to UIC. university of indian and chinese 🙁

according to wiki,

Race Number Percentage
White 6,561 43.3%
Asian American 3,849 24%
Hispanic 2,499 16.5%
African American 1,377 8.9%
Middle Eastern 1,013 6.7%
Native American 37 0.02%

The first year class is 95% white. I dunno about the other classes though.

There are many cities in Arkansas where it's 80%+ white or 90%+ white.

My hometown is 91% white. The town where I grew up is 84% white.

It seems that people tend to remember the minorities a bit more since they stand out a bit if the class is over 90% white.

I've never seen a pharmacy class that is 90% white... I'm pretty sure my designation as caucasian is in the minority of my class.

Huh... maybe its a west coast thing.

Haha.. Take a trip through the 'ol heartland and you'll find a whole new world

Yeah in Florida it seems like Caucasians are also in the minority in regards to pharmacy school. That's middle America though... It doesn't seem like newcomers ever venture too far inward. Lol. I don't think I could ever live in a landlocked state because I grew up in an island surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Caribbean :-O

I feel sorry for everyone who didn't live in a diverse community!

My high school was 45% white, 20% asian, 20% hispanic, 15% black. Great place!

I know for sure I wouldn't want to go to a pharmacy school that doesn't have diversity.

It seems we have hijacked this thread, but you make an excellent point about appearance. I think it might be something more subconscious. We are also more likely to bond with someone of our own ethnicity/culture or someone who has the same mannerisms.

That always depends on the person though. I suppose people who are more traditional tend to be that way since it's what I notice.
