Hi all

So my grades are weak. Sub 3.0 overall and BCPM. My goal is to enter into an SMP program for Fall 08. I have time to take 12 hrs (Unoffical Post-bacc) next semester but my question is should I take more Upper Level Biologies ( I have taken about 20 hrs 300/400 level courses in my previous degree) or should I retake the science courses I did poorly in before or take a mix between the two. Thanks all for your time and input!

Been in your shoes before, I suggest considering:

(1) Evaluate why you have a low GPA. For me it was finding more time to study and what not. Might be the same for you, or perhaps better study methods? You just don't want to keep repeating your mistakes ya know? There is redemption, as long as you do well=).

(2) Suggest taking more advanced coursework assuming you are OK with the knowledge you gained in the classes you "did poorly in". I only use this as an example, and i DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO YOU, but for me, I got B's and C's in GChem. I took Physical Chemistry and got A's in them. Physical Chemistry is essentially GChem + Physics + Calculus...so clearly I knew my stuff. You are the best person to gauge which courses to take.

(3) Retaking classes works best if you have a D or F grade, OR if you intend to DO schools. I'm not sure how SMP's look at this. However in the end, you are expected to do well when repeating a class anyway, so it kinda takes away from the "ummpph" that you get from getting an A.

Anyway yea, continue challenging yourself, but walk that fine line where you can maintain a strong GPA as well. For me, I focused on new and more advanced coursework rather than retaking anything. Although my GPA sucked (2.65) way back in the day, my foundation in the basic sciences was still rather strong which allowed me to excel at the those advanced courses. Your call! Regardless..good luck!:luck:
