Hi all,

My question is this... I haven't taken the GRE yet (October 20th!), but based on my practice tests, I'm currently scoring at a cumulative 1100-1150. I know that many schools look at your GRE and GPA and weed out from that. My GPA is only a 3.4, but as a double major at an Ivy League. I also have 5 years of research experience, one year being post-bac clinical research, and have worked for two top ten research schools. I also have two years experience as a peer counselor and am applying to primarily counseling Ph.d programs.

I realize this has turned into a lowly post on chances but I'm feeling very anxious as to whether or not a poor GRE score can invalidate the years of preparation I've done to get into one of these programs. Does anyone have any insights? Thanks so much.

Depends on how the department in question looks at GRE scores. Some use them as a first stage weedout, in which case you're screwed at a lot of places, but not all. Others look at them as just one part of a package, in which case you're in a lot better shape because you have so much other stuff to support your application. That said, you need to work on bringing those scores up. Take a class, buy some study/practice books, and see if you can't get at least a 600 on each section.

Prep for the math section... work the problems in the Princeton book, 3 days was all it took for me to raise my math score considerably... best, cheapest, and quickest way to get your score up.

If it helps, I got interviews at schools that claimed to cut off at 50%, even though my quant was below that.
