Hello all. First posthere. I got some great advice fromDrMidlife on Virginia post-baccs. I’dlike to ask for suggestions on post-baccs I’d have a CHANCE at getting in with mylow stats in any state. I’ve gonethrough the databases and see about 20 I’m not screened out for so I’d likeopinions from those who have gone through it before and know more than thewebsites say about the reality of my situation.

I’m looking for a program with a strong linkage ifsuccessful and hopefully no glide year. Tobe upfront, I’d really like to go to USUHS, EVMS, or ETSU eventually, but amopen to others including VCOM which I just started looking at and would applyVERY broadly. If there are any programsyou think those schools would appreciate, even if it is not their own or theirstate, that would be great too. Droppingout of the army to just do undergrad courses is not really an option for meright now. I would get out for a good(hopefully linked) post-bacc. Thanks forany advice you can give.

PS I realize how low my stats are. I’m just looking for some support and ideas, not a reality check or sarcasm when I already know my chances are uphill.

My stats:

VA resident

uGPA (2006 grad): 2.54 sci 2.77 cum(3.02 cum if total all courses including grad)

grad GPA (MPH/MBA): 3.4

MCAT 2011: 7P 11V O 9B – 27O

EC:
6x years hard science researchwith 5x co-authored papers

Paramedic with 3x years active volunteerexperience (including hospital rotations)

6x years Army officer with deploymentsto Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea all managing medical units and treating livepatients, civilian and military casualties, by myself in the field under fireand in field hospitals

I forgot to mention VCU's postbac. I've heard of people getting into VCU med school from VCU's postbac, coming from sub-3.0, not URM.

First of all, thank you for serving. Your experiences are invaluable.

That said, maybe go to a 4-year state school for a few years and retake all of your Cs, Ds, and Fs. Then apply to a PB. Your low MBA/MPH GPA makes me wonder how you would do in a PB, to be honest. It seems like you have not learned the error of your ways, which could result in a lot of wasted money in a post-bacc program.

It's important to keep in mind that most successful PB students have something like a 3.8+ GPA. You can't really afford any more Bs at the PB stage. I am honestly not convinced you would be able to do that at this point. Please prove me wrong.

Just so it's out there, the 3.4 is with AMCAS scoring no repeats. It's a 3.8 at the school. I had to drop out of 2x courses in the middle (to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan each) and therefore got Fs in those. It's cool though. Take care.

Woah, check in with your school and see if those can be retro-actively withdrawn instead of F's. petition and keep pushing, as having to deploy is certainly a valid reason to get a W instead of an F, even if you didn't do what you needed at the time to get the classes officially dropped. I wouldn't let those F's stand without a fight myself.

Your school doesn't get a vote on GPA calcs. AMCAS & AACOMAS set the rules. You have to list every class you've ever taken, your school has to send the transcript directly, and the calcs are done by the app service.

I agree with seeker, get these grades changed. Hire a lawyer if you need to.

I'm surprised your school reacted in that way. Did they know that you had been deployed? Or did they think you just stopped showing up? Did you try to fight the issue? How much time has elapsed since then?

I would fight like hell to get this resolved - it could make a HUGE difference.

Thanks everyone. I tried to appeal but it had been several months after the fact. I had hoped to come back and finish the incomplete. It was clear in the syllabus and I admitted to it in several emails with administrators that I knew the policy. If I had appealed in time, it may have worked, alas, it is one of the many (if smaller) sacrafices I made to serve. Hopefully if an adcon gets to the point in my app to listen to that and it wasn't thrown out to begin with and this is the last concern, they may listen to one more detail and I may have a chance haha.
