Loyola University PM&R

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! I'll begin my PM&R residency at Loyola next June. I ranked them high after my interview in November (right below Mayo and RIC, which didn't pan out). Unfortunately I don't remember tons of specifics about the interview process itself ... seperate interviews with two docs and then the director. 3 residents accepted per year. The group of residents I met were very happy with the program. I do have a list of questions I sent the program before interview time and the answers I was sent ... maybe that will help you some:

(1) Do you recommend an audition rotation at your site in order to be considered for a residency?
It is not necessary to complete a rotation here to receive an invitation to interview.

(2) What kind and how many months of elective opportunities are offered at your site?
We offer a 4-week rotation in Rehab, which gives the student an opportunity to rotate through all areas of rehab that are offered at Loyola & Hines VA.

(3) How many hours are there in the average resident workweek.
The residents work approximately 50+ hours per week

(4) What is the call schedule like?
Call is taken from home, with resident covering 1 week-end per month.

(5) What is the patient population? Inpatient/outpatient ratio? Volume? Demographically speaking?
At the VA the patient population is obviously predominantly male. General population of male/female at Loyola.
We try to arrange our rotations to accommodate a 50/50 status of inpatient and outpatient.
--> Note: the VA here is HUGE ... one of the largest facilities I've been in, and a good chunk of your PM&R training happens there ... so if you hate VAs, look elsewhere.

(6) What is your hospital's general feeling concerning D.O.'s?
We currently have 2 DO residents in our program.

(7) What kind of musculoskeletal training/research opportunities are available at your site?
Availability of MSK & research are based on the resident's desire to participate. There are numerous opportunities.

(8) Are there any opportunities for residents to use osteopathic manual manipulation clinically? Is such a practice acceptable at your institution?
Residents are expected to follow the guidelines of the PM&R residency during their training period. There may be opportunities to participate, but it is not a scheduled activity.

(9) What special features might I look forward to at your residency?
A well-rounded training program with a combination of University based & VA teaching.

(10) How are the didactics structured at your institution?
Didactics are structured to cover all aspects of required training as well as required competencies. We share many education activities with other residency programs, i.e. orthopaedics & podiatry.
--> Let me add here, as I recall, some amount of time is spent in the PGY2 year participating in dissection of cadavers with associated some associated lectures... a real plus in my opinion. In PGY3 ( and maybe PGY4 though I'm not sure) you are more on the teaching end of these dissection actvitities.

(11) How large is the library? What kinds of computer facilities are available to the residents? On a related note, how computerized in general is the hospital system at your site?
Access to both the Loyola University library & VA library are available. The Loyola library personnel are helpful and knowledgeable in research, etc.
The VA is completely computerized for patient data, Loyola is making strides to reach that same goal. Many areas are already on the EMR. There are computers available for use by residents both at Loyola & the VA, as well as in the Loyola library.

(12) Does your hospital offer any kind of parental leave benefits/time off?
Parental leave rules are the same as "family leave". Program director must approve, there is a limit of 12 weeks, and any time taken because of Family leave would need to be made up, with possible extension in duration of training.

I interviewed here with a good friend of mine from school ... I loved the place ... he hated it. He thought it was too VA based, which didn't bug me. I thought the facilities looked great, that the program covered the broad spectrum of PM&R extremely well, and that the faculty were a thoughtful/intelligent lot (mostly RIC trained). Also, the director said that a high proportion of their residents were heading off into various fellowships successfully. So don't let the small size scare you too much.

Good luck! Maybe I'll see you there in a few years.
