Loyola Stritch

Pros
  • More established/well known/higher rank
  • Love the focus on social justice
  • Medical Spanish elective
  • Students seem happier/ felt the best on interview day
  • best job opportunities for significant other
  • Best clinical opportunities/ academic center
Cons
  • $62,000 more expensive than FIU
  • Out of state/ far from a support system
  • Weather
  • Will need a new vehicle

FIU HWCOM
Pros
  • Cheaper than Loyola, more expensive than MSUCOM
  • Grew up in the area, close to a support system
  • weather
Cons
  • less well known/ newer program
  • No academic center affiliation/have to travel for rotations
MSUCOM
Pros
  • Significant scholarship makes it my most affordable school
  • Already in West Michigan, moving will be easier
  • Many alumni all over the US, have heard good thing about the program
Cons
  • DO school, less prestigious
  • Possibly have to move my 3rd/4th year for rotations

Summary: Loyola made a great impression on me on my interview day, loved talking to the students and the faculty. FIU HWCOM is a solid school and close to my support system. MSUCOM gave me a scholarship that significantly reduced my cost of attendance. All of the schools have similar missions which align to mine. Not completely sure of my specialty, but I am leaning heavily towards primary care/community medicine.

EDIT: The total cost difference between FIU and Loyola would be 60,000$

Definitely choose MD > DO (no disrepect for DOs its just that our current system opens more doors MDs at the moment) Staying close to your support system is very important during the tough journey that med school is so I would say that FIU would be the best choice. You will most likely end up having the same opportunities at FIU and Loyola (they're similarly ranked) so saving some $$ and being close to home sounds like a winner, not to mention the amazing weather.
