I am in the same boat as all of the rest of you. I have been accepted to Rush, Loyola, and UIC. As of today, I am leaning more towards Loyola. However, I have thought much more about UIC after receiving my financial award package from Loyola. All in all though I feel that Loyola is the better fit for me.
Number one it has the minimum class time out of all three institutions, with what seems to be very good instruction at that compared to the other med schools. The majority of the class attends each lecture, which should say something about the level of instruction. In addition, it seems all the notes and overheads are given out over the internet. I have also really not heard anything bad said about Loyola. Moreover, the facilities are not even comparable at Loyola to other med schools. The price is very expensive, but very comparable to many other private schools. The administration also seems very responsive and helpful to many of the students. Also, in between the first and second year you have the opportunity to serve in a third world nation for two to three weeks.
As for the clinical training, I was not sure about it in the beginning. However, I have been hearing more and more good things about it. Hines VA is one of the largest (and maybe the largest) VA hospital in the nation. Loyola hospital is also nothing to look down upon. As one of their students told me, it has 523 beds, which is actually more than cook county (the new one) with only 464. Just to mention a few other aspects; it also includes a level one trauma center, a burn center, a surgical pavillon, a neonate ICU (50 beds), a Ped ICU (18 beds), and one of only four cranial base surgery centers in the nation. Loyola also has a number of clinics and affiliated outpatient services all around the chicago area. As mentioned in a previous post you can also do rotations at county to get a more diverse patient population.
I have asked a lot of people where I should go, and I get the same reply as many of you (you will not go wrong with either). However, I am pretty confident about the education given at Loyola and I thought I would just give my two cents about it.
