What can anyone tell me about LSU oms program. I went on an interview and was impressed by the program but the working conditions were terrible. They told me call was Q6??? and that an average day was from like 6am - 6 or 7pm...this was from one of their interns. Is this actually true? I heard from other people that the program was super intense. I'm asking this because I'm trying to make my rank list. any info would be helpful.
Charity is a charm that's for sure
🙂. Of the 42 months of OMS during the residency, only 19 of them are spent there...the rest are as you'll recall, spent at more civilized locations. The reason call has been Q6 for us this year is because we have 3 pre-residency interns to share it with. This is the first time that's happened at Charity, so don't count on it happening for you...The residents 1 year ahead of us didn't have any interns and so call was q4 most of the time with 2-3 months of Q2 when anesthesia rotations started--(for us call is still only Q4 when people rotate to anesthesia). The 4th year resident probably works harder than us though...they operate virtually every evening and all the night so all the trauma we get doesn't clog up the elective OR time. Great experience for them but very demanding...they easily exceed 110 hrs/week...but that's temporary, just for 3 months.
One other thing is unlike some programs, we take mandible fractures every night 24 hrs/day 365 days/yr, and the rest of head and neck trauma every 3rd night, and as you'll recall from the numbers last year - nearly 800 mandible fractures we treated - it means when you're on call you rarely get more than 2 hours of sleep, no matter what time of year it is. Besides that, there's always trauma in the OR at night, and the 4th year needs some help.
Average day: start 5:30-6am, monday finish around 3pm, tuesday have conference so don't finish until 7pm, weds have anatomy class so finish 6-7pm, thursday off by 5pm most of the time except 3 months for a tmj class in which you finish at 7pm, fridays off by 3pm. All in all not too bad. There's no "evening rounds" and rarely "weekend rounds". I'm just lucky we've got so many interns!
Ask me any more questions and I'll give you biased answers
