I'm at the situation where I'd really hate to lie, but at the same time, I will do anything to protect my bases.

In the case I tell a school they're my 1 choice and that ill reject any other school but end up going with another one at a later time, what will be the consequences?

You just can't get licensed in that state later. But you've got 49 others, so no big deal.

Maybe others aren't so up front with their fibs, but you're not alone in your strategy. But they've probably heard that line enough that it might not mean anything to them.

What are you hoping to gain by this? Why not just be honest and say that you are applying to a few other schools but that theirs is one of your top choices (assuming it is). I don't know if there will be any 'consequences' per se, but you might feel kind of guilty, and if you ever have to interact with them professionally again it might not be pleasant.

I used to know a guy who did this way back, I think he was pinned up for all to see on 2 planks of wood stuck together in a X shape. kidding of course. Youll be fine. Schools dont talk to each other about applicants.

Look at it from the schools perspective as well...what does a school lose if you say it's your top consideration, get accepted, but don't attend? aside from the 44 cent letter they sent you, absolutely nothing. They won't think about it twice...they will have many other applicants vying for your spot.

You can just say you changed your mind. Are we not allowed to do that anymore?

You're about to enter the professional world and enter a field where you are given a lot of trust and autonomy. On a daily basis you will have to make ethical decisions as you decide how you present information to patients, colleagues, insurance companies, and other health care providers.
Id strongly recommend that you decide ahead of time to always be honest, even when it seems that not much is on the line. Pre-deciding becomes a part of your character and will decide what you do when you're under pressure.

Sorry for the ethics lesson, you'll get plenty of that in dental school, but protecting the image of the community is something we take really seriously. The family dentist used to be somebody that you could trust, but in recent years Dentistry's image has suffered due to plenty of fraud and dishonestly.

Someone who lies to get into school will probably lie and cheat to get through school. The same people will continue to be dishonest as dentists. Nows the time to form good habits and build character which is the best practice builder.

I'm guessing that was an autocorrect thing, but I laughed.

As for the original question, I honestly don't think the schools will care... They're not going to feel inclined to accept just because they're your top choice. It might even be taken as a negative thing (I've heard stories where people applied to only one school and the adcoms thought they weren't really serious about going to dental school).
Just don't lie about it. It's not good for your conscience.

In my interview, one of the presenters asked us as a group if we had any alternative choices. Of course, everyone mentioned what other schools they were applying too.

I understand the compelling feeling to tell them thinking it's what they want to hear, but honestly I dont think they want to hear that.
It would be unfair for them to expect it from an applicant, especially considering the importance they place upon ethics.

It's hilarious when a school asks you what your number one choice is during an interview. Do they really expect you to say, "This school is actually my number four choice and I will decline your offer if my number one school gets me off the wait list." Saying the truth is how you get rejected...

I got an acceptance at Midwestern-AZ when I told them my top choice was UW but then I backed it up with how I didn't have a chance getting in because I'm a no bachelors applicant.

No need to fret, honesty isn't that important anyways to our profession.
