Hello,

Haven't posted in here, but have found this forum very helpful.

Here's my story and my question, hope my question doesn't seem stupid. I got through my M1 year, passed everything, but certainly didn't work as hard or was nearly as driven as I was in undergrad, achieving bronze tablet, etc. In my class, my grades varied, some were at the mean, above the mean, some were below.

I don't really feel like I have a good grasp on the material learned from my M1 year, and my question is how much will this hurt me when it comes time to prepare for Step I. Am I screwed? I hope this question doesn't seem dumb, but yeah I am worried about this exam, and would appreciate any constructive feedback.

Thanks. 🙂

My first year was similar to yours with the exception that I did really well in Path (honored) and neuroscience (high passed).

If I were you, try to spend some time in second year (or over your summer break) going over areas that you are very weak in. Try to learn the stuff- don't memorize material since you won't remember what you memorized anyway. I really believe that would help you if you think that you are particularly weak in something. I was very weak in biochem and somewhat weak in anatomy. Due to my deficiencies, I felt that I needed to take time off from school before taking step one. If I had to do it all over again (famous words 🙄 ), I would have allocated the time to learning anatomy and biochem better during second year.

Also, it seems that second year material is way more important than first year stuff on step one (from the opinions of those who have taken step one already). So, make sure you bust your butt in second year. Studying for step one should be a review of what you learned- definitely not an attempt to learn the material the first time around.

In preparation for 2nd year, I would recommend pulling out a physiology grid book and learning it well. Work through the phys along with the Phys First Aid section and it will really help when you're learning the Path stuff. Since Phys is more about theory than memorization of pathways(biochem) or details (anatomy) it will be good prep for both boards and 2nd year.
