Does anybody know if it is possible to get a scholarship based on good performance during your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd yr of med school. I am entering as an M1 this year with no scholarships, and I was wondering if it is possible to win a scholarship during med school. I know about the military and I'm not interested in that. Can anybody share any info?

I think it varies per medical school. Many medical schools do have grants or scholarships given to students that meet certain criteria from previous years (grades, research, etc) and some you may still need to apply for. Check with your medical school and I am sure they can give you the best information.

I'm just wondering, how common is it to get scholarships in those years? Like if you are among the top students, are you likely to get some monetary love?

I did receive a merit scholarship based upon my performance during my first two years of med school. Several students in my class received this scholarship that was endowed by some rich alumnus and they had a nice dinner for us at a fancy restaurant.

I also had a needs based grant as well. This will vary from school to school.

Again, I think this is something that varies from school to school. My school brought it up on more than one occasion that there were merit scholarships given out after M-1, so I got the impression they do reward top students that didn't already have a scholarship to begin with, but I have no idea what other schools are like.

It will vary, check at your particular school. At my school it's pretty common, and the money varies from a little to a lot.

Do you want to do primary care? Those are the most common scholarships I've seen, and they were all pretty much reserved for M3s and M4s.
