Hi, I’m deciding between two jobs right now: one as a medical assistant at a local clinic, and the other as a newborn hearing screener in the hospital (mother-baby floor).

I’ve worked as an MA before and got experience from it, so I’m leaning toward the hearing screener job just to try something new and be in a hospital setting. Has anyone worked as a hearing screener before? Is it worth it in terms of clinical exposure or med school apps

Thanks!

It's hard to answer this question in a vacuum. Neither is anything that will help you stand out. They are both "clinical," though most newborns are very healthy and you're more doing a public health service than anything. But if you've already had experience as an MA and have adequate clinical hours either way, then you can likely just go with whichever one you are personally more interested in and/or pays better.

Newborn screening is important from a prevention standpoint... early identification of infants with hearing loss can lead to early interventions that can prevent delays in language acquisition, etc.

If you haven't had the experience of working in a hospital, with all its protocols and regulations, it could be a new experience that will serve you well when it comes time to do your clinical clerkships.

If the pay is about the same and the commute is about the same, I'd say go for it.

Thanks for the advice.

Edit: Thanks for the link also 🙂

Newborn is the happiest unit in the hospital. Definitely recommend going with that!
