I will be starting in the Fall at MWU-AZ. We are offered our choice of a 13" Macbook Pro or a Dell. What are your experiences with the technologies? What would you recommend?

Just got a 11 inc Macbook Air. It is amazing for carrying around school, pretty good battery life, and definitely fast enough for anything school related and then some. I have a Macbook Pro too, and I definitely recommend the Air for a school computer. Plus your back will thank you in the long run since texts are so heavy!

Cheers

Jumping in here...

I have a MacBook.....BTW love it! Had a Dell and thought it was crap even when I first got it.

My question is is there a mac I can use a stylus with? I would prefer not to lug every thick notebook around if I don't have to.

My wife got a MacBook Pro two months ago that I have been able to use a little bit. I must say I am jealous. They are really easy to use, stylish, light, and so far we've had no problems with it... she can easily bring it anywhere. I've used PCs (Dells) for a long time, but the next computer I will get is another Mac.

13'' pro or air?

THe pro, just because its far more powerful than the air. The air IMO is meant when you have the money to buy a fairly weak computer because you can.haha. it is awesome though, dont get me wrong. its so light. but the pro is phenomenal, especially with the new i5 and i7 chips.

I heard the MacBook Pro gets a lot of viruses.

Macbook. I have a PC and love it (not Dell), but I wouldn't buy a Dell anymore. Their quality has just sunken downhill the last few years and they just aren't what they used to be.

Plus, when you have a laptop for dental school- it gets used, A LOT. Carried around every day in a backpack, laid on tables in labs, etc....You MUST have a sturdy frame. The solid one piece from of the Macbook is to me, clearly it's best quality, and a very important one at that. I wish other manufacturers would build laptops with a similar frame.

False.

Get the MBP, you will be so happy you did! In addition, with the new Office for Mac (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint) you won't have any problems sharing files with your friends that have PCs.

My wife and I went with Macs this last summer and we will never own PCs again.

if your tech IQ isn't that great, then definitely get a mac. if your tech IQ is good and you like to save money, then a windows based computer. if you tend to click on links in emails by reflex, then get a mac.

"PLEASE!! Macs don't get viruses."

Absolutely false, but your chances of getting a form of malware are much higher on windows software. Search "pwn2own 2011" and you'll read how the safari web browser was just exploited on a bug.

My MacBook Pro is over 5 years old now!!! The technology is superior.

should i buy now or wait till d school starts? my current notebook is falling apart.. lol

Trust me the macbook air is plenty fast for school, I have it side by side my macbook pro and if I had to get rid of one this moment, the Pro is going out the window. You are going to be a dental student, so think in terms of what YOU are gonna use it for, not what it is capable of. The Air is like dating a skinny girl, once you do it you never go back 😛 But seriously Mac all the way. Now back to studying for 8 finals 😡

usually the longer you wait, you'll get newer tech. but i don't believe apple doesn't update that often and i think i read about newly announced mac books recently.

I'm totally with you. I love my Air. The Pro may be a better value in terms of speed, hard drive space, and the like, but the Air is perfectly suitable for everything that I do as a student.

The portability is a HUGE plus. If I walk around with nothing in my bag but the Air and a few other little things , I find myself checking to make sure that I didn't forget my computer. If I'm carrying a lot of stuff, I'm very glad that my laptop isn't contributing much to the weight of my bag. Battery lives under various conditions are even better than Apple's advertised times, in my experience.

yea, new macbook pros just came out last month so i'm guessing the next lineup won't come out till next feb, after d school has already started.

air users, do you find not having a disc drive inconvenient for d school purposes?

if MWU charges you the same for MBP and dell, then obviously get the MBP. Worst case scenario, you use dual boot on your MBP to run windows and it'd still way better than the dell.

If you gotta buy it yourself, buy a cheap dell and save $700+

Not at all. Almost everything we need is posted online. They give us some CDs every now and then, so I have an external drive.

No one dislikes apple more than me. they over price everything.
but if i were in your situation I would just get an apple b/c it seems like a cool thing to do. I mean dell is not that big deal anymore. Plus apple costs about 12-1300 but dell are cheap. So to get your money worth go with the apple. Now Go with the pro. Not the air. its just convenient to replace the hard drive etc.. if you go with the air. once yours guarantee runs out, they gonna charge an arm and a leg. lets say if something to go wrong with the hard drive or memory.

-regarding speed, both laptops are fast you wont be able to tell the diff.
-regarding operating system: its better for a student who do no have much experience with the windows. Because apple is such a controlled environment its less likely you would get any viruses. (same goes for Linux systems such as ubuntu, red hat...)

PS... Some schools(undergrad/grad(ms) schools in their library, have free software such as Microsoft office. make a copy of that so that you can install in your new laptop pc or mac. or any other software. Some might even have enterprise edition. Check that so you wont be trowing away money. (BTW you pay for these indirectly through your computer fees)

I used to hate macs more than anyone, and would tease my friends that they're meant for people who are confused by 2 mouse buttons. I have had many PC's, have built several, including one with a custom water-cooling system allowing me to run it at insane speeds completely silently.

With that said, my macbook pro is my greatest computer ever.
