Hello,

There are a number of schools like the one I plan on going to (SUNY UB) that require a laptop. Students can choose between macs and pcs. Here it goes I'll throw the first punch in this brawl.....

Viruses arent a problem for Macs
+pissed+

I think that I'm going to get a Mac. I've had a PC all my life, and had a pretty good time with it, but I just want something different. The macs that I have used have been great. Anymore, it doesn't seem to matter, there isn't the compatibility issue, or lack of software. It seems now just a matter of preference. I vote MAC!

I first learned how to use a mac when I was very young and there used to be this game called star quest (early 90's). After that, pcs took over because of macs lack of software and file compatibilty (which isnt a problem today). Since then I've used pc at home and sometimes macs at school. I consider my self to be intermediate when it comes to being computer savy. I'm planning on going for the mac!!!! 🙂 🙂

mac hands down. no viruses, runs just as fast as day 1, very user-friendly...couldn't be happier.

Just make sure that your program doesn't have a PC requirement.

Don't you guys know that with the new OS X, it is now a linux kernel that is utilized. As a result, now linux viruses can and will affect MAC's.

hmmm..no I didn't know that, thanks for the info!

I'll still get a MAC

I've been a PC user all my life, but I'm gonna get a MacBook Pro in May or June. As long as it has MS Office, web browser, instant messenger, iTunes, I'm fine with that. If I want to play games, I'll just play it on my PS2

Soon enough, Virtual PC will be released for Intel Macs, and you will be able to run Windows at almost full speed using Virtual PC. People have already hacked the new iMacs to run Linux and install VMware emulator on top of it. From what i've heard, the performance is quite good.

I've been wanting a Mac since I bought my iPod. Apple just knows how to make products that are just so darn cool

What other schools that you know of require you to buy a laptop? just curious.....

Well i personally wouldnt trust OS X, it has many flaws many of them not publicly identified.Macz look better than most PCs , oh another thing what kinda OS doesnt have a maximize button (some apps do but its not standard like in Windowz). I have tablet pc it is pretty good you might want to go to bestbuy or w.e thats close to u check it out. Most people after using a tablet never go back. You can type when u feel like or handwrite it then convert it to text( i keep it as it is) and draw diagrams etc. Whatever u end up buying i think accidental damage warranty is a must for most laptops.
cheers

I heard that NYU, Boston U, san antonio, all give a dvd that has the coursework. I am only sure of SUNY BU because that is where I will be going.

Linux systems, from what I've heard are bulletproof when it comes to viruses. Not only because of the specific platform itself, but its tooo hard to write viruses for linux. I'm not a computer specialist, so correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my understanding of it.

PC all the way baby!! Everything is soo expensive on Mac, from software to memory... I love DELL and HP by the way

If I had to get a Windows laptop, it'd be an IBM... Dell = 👎

Funny, I've heard some of my classmates somehow complain about dell; I have both an HP and a Dell Laptop and I really love my HP (this baby takes the punches- she goes with me on all my road trips) and since the dell stays at home I still haven't really seen what this dell system is really made of.

I have the perfect solution!!! I have a Dell laptop and installed Mac OS as a second partition. Now when I start up my computer it asks me which one I want to go to.... runs smoothly.

well, there are hacked copies of Universal Binary OS X Tiger that can be installed on PC's. The driver support sucks though, so I wouldn't bother with it.

as far as virus's, there has been I believe one documented virus incident that was all over the news like a month ago. That was quickly squashed.

Personally, I believe the quality of ThinkPads will drop gradually. ThinkPads are IBM by name only right now. It's manufacturered by the Chinese company Lenovo.

I've worked at the IT desk at my school and there is not a worse pc then dell out there, from what I have seen. HP seems to be very popular, but on the other hand IBM is not as widespread as HP, perhaps due to price. My father has an HP laptop and its great. By the way, macs arent that much more then pcs

Alright guys. I just bought a new Dell E1705. Awesome laptop. Big, but awesome.
Perfect for somebody who wants power for work (like calculating the largest prime number for their encryption algorithm) or for gaming.

I've installed Linux, MAC OS X panther and freaking effing windows on it.

No only MAC notebooks for me. Although i like garage band, but still i don't like macs.

Here's what i did to install OS X on my intel architecture machine.
I used PearPC. It's a powerPC architecture emulator.
Then i got a hard disk image of 10gig in rar format and installed OS X on it.

So now i have 3 operating systems running on my super dell E1705 laptop. Obviously i can only use one at a time.

Also it comes with 256 MB nVidia 7800 video card so you can play any and all games on it on almost max performance. I just finished F.E.A.R. on max settings.

It also has the intel dual core processor, but it drains the battery. So be sure to buy an extra 8-cell battery if you want to use it for 8hours on battery. I bought an extra for myself.

It's definitely a desktop replacement laptop.

PowerPC emulator? Must be slow as hell.
here's the laptop I'm gonna get
Apple MacBook Pro
2.0ghz Intel Core duo
1GB DDR SDRAM
100GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
4X Superdrive
ATI Radeon X1600
built in iSight, FrontRow

The installation takes several hours but it ain't that bad once up and running. Infact i was pretty impressed.

Nice specs. Though, i think my notebook can beat your notebook in a road fight. Maybe we should try them out in a parking lot.
Just kidding.

That's a blatantly false statement. Memory is the same. Most software is priced the same as well. You'll also get tons of great software for free with the Mac.

Oh come on Gavin, we all know that MAC's are expensive as hell. But yes, memory obviously is the same price.

What you guys don't understand is that Mac's are way awesomer than PC's. First off know that every game you buy for a Mac is going to be a good one, because it's been out on a PC for 5-10 years and all your buddies have been playing it and telling you how cool it is. Secondly no need to worry about those troublesome hardware upgrades just throw your old Mac out and go buy a new one. Thirdly all of your eccentric art buddies will think you are way cooler if you own a Mac, PC's are way too conformist.

I'm just messing around, I think Mac's are great. I personally have an alienware PC, but that's just cause I'm really into gaming and nobody makes a better gaming laptop than alienware.

This is so true!
I am not a big fan of Micro$oft, but there is so much more available software for windows. Windows also offers much wider hardware support. Oh, and firefox works like a charm if you don't want to get any viruses.

umm don't worry.. you can make time for 3 things in dental school...

alcohol, working out, and third is depends on your preferences -- (watching tv, playing computer games, hanging out with signficant other, ..) that sums up dental school..

I loved my mac in dental school (former PC user). Ran on OS 9. Right before I graduated, the school insisted I install OS X because "it's just so much better." Sadly the mac died soon after OS X was installed. The Apple store in my local mall laughed at me when I asked if they could fix my 4-year old G3 powerbook. 🙁

The mac was enough for me to use MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, manage digital photos, listen to music, browse the net, and create the dental school yearbook on Adobe Photoshop & some other program. The powercord did set fire a few times, but the school's warranty thankfully covered it.

I recently found a mac repair shop in NYC and am hoping they can help me save my trusty mac from dental school.

Is it true that with macs there are no popups? Last time I used a mac was a long time ago....(when word star was the latest word processor.)

I haven't seen a pop-up in ages. But then again, you can get a pop-up blocker for windows and you get the same result. 🙂

Pit Fall
Pong
Solitare
Space Invaders
Joust
and now World of Warcraft

This is so awesome!

Dig Dug ROCKS! 😍

I went to the Apple store today at the mall. If you arent scared of learning the ....truth...(kind of like the MATRIX movie), then maybe you should pay your local apple store a visit. For me, its official, I'm totally going mac.

Everything in the store, is dual core and they even have quad core processors. That is rawwwww 👍
There warrenty for 3 years is around $100. Their parts arent as expensive as I thought. If you want to upgrade the ram from the min. 512mb that they put on all their machines, you can do so all the way to at the very least 2 gb. An extra 512mb costs $90. Meanwhile, at bestbuy, a pc 512mb ram (cheapest price) goes for over $150. A lot of the features that we enjoy on pc where acutally baught from mac. your control+c for cut and so forth are all originally mac. Macs have alot more control-shortcuts then pcs. Software incompatibility is pretty rare these days too. Plus, the whole cpu and inside the console stuff is shoved into the back of a flat screen. Thats awsome. Dude, the extra knit pics here and there are lots and there standards are high. Once you go mac, you cant go back!

There aren't many applications in the market that utilize the quad core processor. Heck there aren't many applications that utilize the dual core even. I believe you'll have to wait a couple more years to fully utilize your quad core processor.

Windows, itself, is nothing but a generic imitated Mac OS. I've always owned PCs... but with all the data I've lost on my PC at work to crashes and other system problems... I'm going to make the switch to Mac for school. They're just more dependable.

PC. sure it has its flaws, but you can't beat the # of software titles available.

I bought a Mac too, just to have something new. I gotta admit, its not that great as many people say. I dont know why people say theyre fast, cause theyre pretty damn slower than PCs, this r G4 laptops btw, I dunno about the new Intel ones. My Ibook, the programs crashes all the time.

In the end, Im giving my Ibook to my little sis and getting a IBM Thinkpad. Just a lot more usability with Windows.

The apple store website says the intel is 4x faster. I read about Apple and it's a pretty interesting story. Apple has always been an innovator, yet they only control 2% of the market. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Computer

That is because there CEO's are crappy when it comes to the marketing side. Seriousley, there last CEO was booted from his position by a unanimous vote of the trustees. Almost all of the marvels of pc and the idea of windows are really mac. Millions of dollars where paid in order to get legal rights to use the word "windows" for pcs.

PC's are more versatile to upgrade and have so much more third party support.

Yeah, but I want to be an apple geek and own a brand which was started by two guys in a garage thus, demonstrating good ole American ingenuity.

upgrade? Chances are, you won't be upgrading your laptop (the fact that most dental students buy laptops makes this a relevant fact). The only thing you may possibly upgrade is memory, and maybe external storage. Also, the fact that Apple is using Intel parts now, it will be much easier to upgrade. It has been reported that the iMac and Mac mini's use socket Core duos, and both can be upgraded using stock Intel Core duo chip.

as for 3rd party support....there are just so many redundant software products out there, you can easily find a Mac equivalent. The software I use on my PC right now include FireFox, iTunes, Adobe PhotoShop, MS Office, there's Mac counterparts for them. The only legit concern I have for buying a Mac is gaming...but I'll just use my PS2 for gaming purposes.

Cmon guys, PCs are way better. You can install and run a cracked version of Windows but you get can't a cracked version of Mac OS! It's obvious PCs are the best choice, financially speaking.
