What is the procedure for updating schools with future completed pre-reqs after AAOCMAS has been submitted and verified?

I did not enter any planned coursework as I am still deciding which institute I would like to do my post-bachelor courses at (Genetics and Biochemistry).

I believe you just send a new transcript over to AACOMAS like you did before.

Hi guys! i'm debating whether to add the "Honoring Outstanding Achievement award" that I got from my JC to my Awards, Honors, Scholarships list... i mean i only went to that school during summer and part time during regular semesters. Also, should i even list those "Certificates of appreciation" i got from volunteering?

My AACOMAS application was released on 6/12/09 and I don't see my GPA calculation anywhere...😕 Also when i click on the link next to the release date that reads "View" I get this message "Sorry could not find file at this time." What should be appearing here, and how long will it take before it works properly? Thanks!!

It definitely wouldn't hurt to enter in all of those. 👍

As I said above, I do not think you'll get to see your GPA calculation ever again. As for the error, you should contact AACOMAS if the problem persists, but what you should be seeing is a copy of the full application that the school receives. It's nothing that should concern you, really.

I had this posted elsewhere but didn't receive any feedback...I realize this isn't exactly the best thread for my question. Thanks in advance for the advice!

I have a 3.56 sci gpa, a 3.57 overall gpa and a 22R MCAT. I also have a masters degree, tons of extracurriculars, 5 years of research experience, 200 hrs physician shadowing, 150 hrs volunteering in the ED, etc. I just got the MCAT scores back last week...it's much lower than my practice tests...needless to say I was a bit disappointed...not sure what happened...

I am scheduled to retake the MCAT July 31st. Would it be wise to apply now or should I wait until the scores of my retake come back? Personally, I really would like to apply now...but I'm not sure if it's the wisest thing to do...the 22 seems just a bit too low. Thoughts?

I would apply now and just indicate that you are retaking. Your app would be put on hold when the schools get it, but verification takes forever so you may just be getting verified by the time you take the test if you submitted today, which would mean less than a month schools would be waiting on your scores because once your verified you aren't automatically released to schools. I have been verified for a week and still have not been submitted to schools. Which btw, does any one know how often they release applications to schools?

Once I was verified it took them 8 days to release it to my designated schools. I just called them today and asked that if I wanted to add more schools how long it would take before the schools would have access to my application, they said it would take about 2 weeks...I don't know what they do there, but dang, this is ridiculous.

So...when I type in microsoft word, my character count is 4497. When I copy and paste into notepad, its 4517. When i typed it manually INTO aacomas, its STILL 4517. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??? Word says its 4497 WITH spaces!! AGGHHH im going crazy. Anyone have this problem???

Yes!! I noticed this same thing too, I don't know what is up with how MS Word counts its characters. Anyway, do you have 2 spaces after each period? If so, get rid of one of them. This ought to cut out enough characters.

no i dont. i got rid of those spaces! i dont want to delete anything else...how come this has worked out for others?? what did you guys do?

also, how do i add in a course that I took in my sr. yr of high school but got college credit and a grade from the community college I later took courses at? I can't enter "high school student" under the grade level. And would I enter the attendance dates for the community college starting at 2002 (when i took my high school course) all the way till 2006 (when i took college courses). Won't it look like i went there for four years? im confused on this one

Enter in those courses as a part of your Freshmen year at the college you received the credit from. Start from the year you actually began college, not from when you took the course in high school.

The problem is, my credit is from 2002 on my transcript. I took college courses in 2005 and 06 in the summers at this school. If I enter the attendance dates as 05-06, then AACOMAS won't give me the option of choosing 2002 as my transcript date for which the class is listed. The drop bar only lists 2005-2006 and then that would interfere with the date on my transcript.

Hi everyone,

I just have a short question for those who may have more experience in this app process.

How many schools do folks typically apply to?

I looked through the DO handbook, and so far most of the schools don't look too different from one another in terms of MCAT and tuition. So I was planning to shotgun it and simply check off every private school. But I thought I'd check here before submitting the application.

Thanks.

You're not the only one. This happened to me as well. I ended up having to cut down to 4470 to guarantee that it'll fit.

Try slimming down the essay by cutting out unnecessary words or combining sentences.

Typically people apply to around 8-10 schools. I'm applying to 12 schools, but I'm just applying DO. I have friends who are applying MD and DO and they are doing about 6-8 DO schools (as of now). It really depends on your stats and how you like your chances. If you're below ave in terms of stats, I would suggest at least 12-14. Just my $.02..

Appreciate the advice. I'm not doing MD schools, so it looks like my plan to apply to 22 schools may be too much.

I've been reading this specific thread trying to see if anyone asked the question i wanted to ask, but like after page 5 my sight seemed to be diminishing and my eyes were just glazing over.

and also - i'm not so bright on the searching-threads business.

ok - i plan to retake 2 classes for a better grade and i also plan to fulfill the English and psychology (6 credits each, and i have 3 in english and 3 in pscyhology already completed) requirement before i graduate next may. really want to apply this year which means i have to update whenever new grades come in and what not.

how do schools view this? is it a bad idea to be updating my transcripts after the fall and then after the winter just so the schools i apply to can know what's going on with my gpa?

any outside-of-the-box suggestions?

I was reading the CIB today. It mentioned that when completing the PS to NOT use Microsoft Word because some of the symbols and text might not transfer over correctly. Apparently notepad and some other apps are fine. Whether this is true across the board remains to be seen as I'm sure many people write a draft in Word and then cut and paste to their application. But, at least that's what the CIB says...

It's fine to not have all of your requirements done before you apply as long as you'll have them before matriculation (which is what you seem to be planning). That said, it won't be looked down upon that you're updating the schools with new info because it shows that you're still interested in them, but just be sure to indicate that you are indeed planning to retake those courses.

we can add or remove schools once we submit, correct??

can we add or remove schools once we submit our applicaton w/o significant delay?

2 questions about AAOCMAS:
1) if I've taken a class twice, do I label the first take as "repeat 01" and the second as "repeat 2"?

2) If I took a course for graduate credit but was not enrolled in a graduate degree program, do I still mark it as "Graduate"?

Neither of these questions are answered in the support section of AACOMAS, as far as I can tell. Also their "Instructions for completing colleges and coursework" guide seems to be lifted from TMDSAS...??

How long does it normally take for AACOMAS to verify they received your transcript? I had mine sent in mid May and they still have not received it. Starting to worry 😱

About 4-6 weeks, but depending on the volume of applicants received it could be more... AACOMAS isn't the most organized/efficient service ever lol

I don't know if you can remove (you may not be able to), but you can add schools after you submit. It will still cost you, of course.

To avoid any possible delays, you can wait until your application is verified to add more schools.

Answered you in your thread. 😉

I've never retaken a course so I can't help you with 1. With 2, I don't think it can be considered a grad course unless it was at a course level that is grad (500+).

And yeah, AACOMAS' instructions seems to link to TMDSAS' for some reason. Possibly a bug. Or they're lazy.

CardioPlus is thinking of verification. 😛

It'll take a few weeks at MOST, and it takes a few days for them to update your status to "received". Since it's been about a month for you, I would wait a few more days, then try to contact AACOMAS or the school that sent it.

Yes, it was graduate level, it clearly says "GRADUATE CREDIT" on the official transcript. It was not part of any graduate degree program, however. Should I mark it as pos-baccalaureate or graduate credit? (it was just 1 class)

Hey guys. How long does in usually take AAMCOMAS to complete processing. I have been submitted for nearly three weeks. I submitted to the AMCAS at the same time and have been complete for over a week.

Check the verification thread, most people take about 4 weeks. They also estimate at 4-6 weeks.

I would say you're about half way to being verified as more people have started submitting. It took them 22 days after getting all my transcripts to verify mine and I submitted on the second day it was open.

Does anyone know how you enter coursework for a class you've repeated twice? I'm going through it right now and am just doing it as AMCAS had me do it - i.e. by marking the first class as "repeat 01" and the second as "repeat 02" - is this right?

So i think i put in the wrong expiration date on my credit card when i submitted my aacomas app. Can i call them and have them fix it for me?

If the charge went through, then you're good to go. I think the only reason they have you put the expiration date is for verification/fraud prevention and you should get an error message if the expiration date is incorrect...I'm not sure on this, but this has been my experience.

If I turned everything in except my updated MCAT score. Would my status be "verified" as well? or they just wait for MCAT score before posting "verified'?

I have a question about a retake situation. I should and will contact AACOMAS about it also.

I took a 4 semester credit hour 300 level human physiology (no anatomy) class at a university during my junior year and got a C-.

I then took a 8 semester hour 200 level series of Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II a year later at a local college and received an A in both human anatomy and physiology I and human anatomy and physiology II.

Will AACOMAS replace C- in the first human physiology class (no anatomy) with an A since I got an A in both I and II. Also does the 300 vs. 200 level classes matter?

Thanks a bunch!!

I doubt that they will replace ur cred. The reason would be that The title of the classes are different, so they might have different subjects and levels. Thus, they are not equivalent.
I think they'd just calculate them all instead of replacing them.

They will not replace your original physiology grade since it is not an equivalent course (and course level can matter depending on the situation, but not so much in this one).

Does anybody know if the entry order in Extracurricular, Volunteer, Community Service section matter? also, does anyone know how is it ordered? because I dont see a trend at all...

I don't think it really matters. When I did mine I simply listed them as I stumbled across old resumes. Plus, the adcom guys will find what they want in your app. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

For the ECs, volunteer, and Community Service section are we only mentioning activities from the start of undergrad (not high school)?

I heard different answers to this but is shadowing doctors included in this section or not?

If we will be volunteering in the future (fall and spring), do we account for the hours in advance? Or simply update it later?

I never really kept track of the hours I did, rather the impact i could be making. Is estimation ok?

I have many of the phone numbers of the volunteer agencies I belonged to. Is it a good idea to add them for reference in the "description section"?

You have to use your own discretion for activities that are done in high school. Typically you wouldn't include them, but it depends whether or not you started, for example, volunteering while in high...then definitely include it. But, if you only did a few hours at the soup kitchen over winter break junior year...don't bother. It'll just look like you're trying to beef up your app with filler.

This is my opinion on the shadowing...include it where ever you can fit it in. No where else does it specifically ask for time spent shadowing. Technically, shadowing is something that is extracurricular...so that's where I put it. Frankly, I don't think it matters where you put it as long as it's there for them to read. At any rate, for goodness sake don't leave it out just because there isn't a designated spot for it...it's a big boost to your app...especially come interview time.

For volunteering done in the future...don't include it now. You don't want to be held accountable for something you assumed you would accomplish only to have something come up that ruins your plans. Only bank on what you've already done...and indicate that you are still presently volunteering to show that you plan to continue through the rest of the year. If you can, update it later...but hopefully, if you're applying this cycle, you've done some substantial volunteering already.

I would imagine there are some people on here that know exactly how many hours, minutes and seconds that they have volunteered (we are talking about neurotic premeds here...LOL), but for the majority of us (including myself) we are not aware of the exact number of hours. Just take the average number of hours worked each week (you should at least know that) and multiply it by the number of weeks you've volunteered there....it should be a good enough estimate. If you are worried about an exact number, the hospital I volunteer at keeps a record of how many hours we've volunteered...perhaps your workplace does too.

If you would feel better putting the numbers down you should...if for nothing but peace of mind. But, honestly, I can't see an admissions committee making phone calls random organizations to verify volunteering hours. I'm not saying it hasn't happened before, but I'd say the chances are slim to none. They have more important things to do...

Hope this helps...I'm applying this cycle as well...In fact, I just sent in my app today. I had it done a few weeks ago, but waited until I decided where exactly I wanted to apply and how I was going to handle the retaking of the MCAT...that sneaky bastard...

Good luck with everything...

my question seems to have been lost in the deluge so I'll post again:

Does anyone know how you enter coursework for a class you've repeated twice? I've retaken a class and am marking the first class as "repeat 01" and the second as "repeat 02" - is this right, or should I enter the first class like a normal one and the *second* as "repeat 01"?

I think you should put the second as "repeat 01" and to make sure put the "Last repeat 01" after ur third try... Right CB? 🙂

As I'm finishing up my PS, i'm having a really hard time to decide whether to include my volunteer award on my PS (currently at 4412 characters). However, part of me is thinking: since i already listed it under the award and EC section, so adcomm ppl should have an idea abt my level of involvement... i really hate that 4500 limit 👎

Don't include things just for the sake of including them; if they're relevant to what you're saying in your PS (such as if it backs up or further elaborates a point) and you feel it helps answer the overarching question of "why medicine", then consider including it. In other words, keep fluff to a minimum. 😉
